Any theme gurus? (a question about dark backgrounds on the starter plan)

What do I want? A dark background that’s easier on my eyes!
I currently use the saga theme, which I really like, except for the fact that I can’t change the background color where my posts appear (without upgrading). I’ve been searching for a new theme and just when I find one I like (enough), and then I go to check if *maybe* the 1 style I have access to will allow me to flip-flop the background and text color, I get the message that “Your site includes premium styles that are only visible to visitors after upgrading to the Explorer plan or higher.”
I’m assuming this means I can’t change said color without jumping to the explorer plan, right?
So, does anyone know of a free or included-in-starter theme for blogs, similar-ish to saga, that does allow for a dark background with light text? Thanks for any assistance or direction!

You can filter the themes to see which ones are Free or included with your plan, e.g., https://wordpress.com/themes/all/free?s=dark.
Remember that you can also create your own theme using patterns, so maybe choosing one where you like colors but are not crazy about the layout could be something to start with :)
