Anyone else having problems with the New Notifications Layout
-
Notification screens are too big and take up too much of page now. If you didn’t go on site at least once a day you wouldn’t be able to reach notifications and likes for they could easily disappear out of reach. If you get more than five likes or comments … you are out of luck seeing them.
The impression one gets, the new layout is designed for mobile use, not for use via a computer…
I used to love visiting my history sites, now I dread it wondering what new update WP has installed…
What are they trying to do, drive us all away?
-
@englandsmonarchs – It’s no impression – they’ve been very open (and a little bit hostile) about the fact that it’s all for streamlining for mobile and tablet users.

I was asked to repost the following here:
I just realized a major flaw in your scrolling notifications. I believe that those who have complained they are only getting replies to their comment conversations in their email are not finding them in your 100 list.
HERE’S WHY: The responses are remaining static. The are not perking up to the top of the line-up.
EX: I get a response, I comment, they respond back. Their return to my response is pinned to their first, or original response. I found about 4 return responses this morning that were at the bottom of the 100. I had no idea they were there and wonder if I ever would have known once they rolled past 100.
Those of us with heavy email loads may never know they are there. I further speculate that writers who receive 100 or more responses to their blog posts when published are going to miss out on their followers feedback.
I also noted that when I reply to comments in the comments section on the far left menu, that the posted response does not cancel the highlighted speech bubble in the 100 line up. It remains looking like a new comment. (Hence I found the problem I referred to above).
Apparently, I am not the only one who feels this needs addressing.

The individual comments are creating their own notification on my side. For example, I created a comment on a post. Then, Josh responded. I responded back, and then, he followed up again. Both of his comments are shown here:
Is that the kind of scenario you’re referring to?

I’m unable to recreate this issue either. When I click on the comment, which exposes the action items, and send off a reply, the comment no longer appears highlighted in blue. To be clear, when you reply back to a comment, it remains blue (unread) on your side. Is that correct?
Please please please ADD the ability to like, approve, trash, spam, and edit comments back to the notifications list when they drop down. It is beyond a painful to have to click and edit each one individually. Why would you even think to take this usability away?
In the previous version of comments, you still had to click the actual comment in order to reply, like, etc. I don’t believe we’re planning on putting the action buttons on the main drop-down menu. You will need to click the individual comment you would like to work with.
However, you can still bulk edit the comments if you would like from the comments dashboard here:

Are you referring to this link?
https://yoursiteaddress.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php
That’s just a generic link. Users will have to replace yoursiteaddress.wordpress.com with their actual site address for it to work. Sorry for not making that clear!

@jeremeylduvall Normally I’d have noticed the placeholder. Guess I’m just too tired and frustrated with this whole issue.
-
See? As I’ve noted before on this topic, there is no point in providing feedback that doesn’t conform to decisions already made without consultation.
“I don’t believe we’re planning on putting the action buttons on the main drop-down menu. You will need to click the individual comment you would like to work with. “
Users provide feedback – which is ignored.
WP is no longer taking any notice of users who use computers.

@jeremeylduvall – If that is the case, then the lag on the new comment system is unacceptable and it made me think that it wasn’t the case.
For a newer “streamlined” service these all seem to be causing 100% more lag. I almost now prefer to use the horrendous iOS app because it has the older systems and runs significantly faster than anything you’ve put out for desktop sites.
-
@jeremeylduvall – Also thanks for treating us like morons. Many of us on here have used WordPress for years and are well aware there is a bulk comment editing feature, however the convenience of editing comments as they come in while you’re working on a blog or editing a page is incredibly valuable. The fact that it’s almost impossible to get back to your administrative board from any of the new pages without going through 2-3 clicks is ridiculous. So much for usability and streamlining.

I just noticed that the comment reply box in the notifications drop-down doesn’t expand. It has the little triangle in the bottom-right corner indicating the box can be resized, but you can only make it wider (which is pointless as there is no space for that) while you can’t make it longer vertically, which is actually what we need to be able to do. As a result one can only see comment replies four lines at a time at this point. I’d appreciate you looking into that. -
In Chrome v40 on a PC, only about half of the notifications show up in the new area compared to what appears here https://wordpress.com/notifications No “infinite scroll” for me.
-
Also, the same thing in Chrome v40 on my smartphone. Only about half the notifications appear.
And on my smartphone (Android), as I reach the bottom of the notifications area, or even if I try to scroll while more notifications are loading, the top menu bar suddenly is replaced by the Reader.
-
I just checked the “infinite scroll” after reading @justjennifer’s comments. In both Chrome 40 and Firefox 35 it only loads the last 50 notifications for me, so the “infinite scroll” is anything but. Of course, if the notifications archive link is brought back as has been requested many times, that won’t be an issue.
This has also probably been mentioned already (not going to read through 90 older posts) but it would really help if 1) notifications at least had a date-stamp in the main drop-down rather than the “Today”, “Yesterday”, “More than 2 days ago”, etc. it currently has, and 2) the feature was added back to show if you’ve replied to a comment. At the moment the interface indicates if you’ve read a comment, but there’s nothing to show if you’ve replied. And yes, for our own blogs we can go to Comments in the dashboard (though we shouldn’t have to), but that doesn’t show replies to our comments on other people’s blogs.
-
i have no notifications at all when i click the box that turns orange or bell. no notification page will appear for 5 days…for at least 2 months, sometimes a day would go by and it would not work, but now it’s constantly/ google chrome…
-
The notifications archive page still exists, but for some reason the dashboard link to it is gone. (Hope this doesn’t mean it’s going to be eliminated; unlike the dropdown, it makes sense.) As noted above, it’s located at https://wordpress.com/notifications and our only option for getting to it now is to bookmark it.
I’ve yet to figure out the useless new dropdown list. (Issue an instruction manual? Attach a legend? Add popup hover instructions?) I can’t figure out if there’s a single-click method to get to the original post and comments, which is where I prefer to respond to comments — in context — since they are usually part of a running conversation. I can’t tell at a glance which notifications I’ve already seen, and I can’t dismiss or close the ones I have seen. The up and down arrows don’t just open and close the list, they jump you to different views or something. New entries, comments, Likes, don’t always appear at the top of the list; sometimes they pop up way down on the list where I’m not going to be looking — unless maybe I overlooked them before. And why on earth would you clutter the list with notifications of my own self-pings?
I suppose I could go back to the old system of having notifications emailed to me. It would be no more cumbersome or frustrating than trying to work with the new dropdown list.
WP should have heeded the old adage: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
-
Okay, this is getting a bit much. The new notification feature is not working properly. Notifications I’ve already responded to keep showing and I can’t go back far enough to find ones that I’ve not responded to. Also, I keep getting timed out when trying to post responses.
I have to go here: https://wordpress.com/notifications to manage my responses. I can view a lot more notifications on one screen and I can scroll back to make sure I respond to everyone.
As I’ve said in another thread, it is best to develop applications that best suit the device being utilized to access it, not to achieve the same look and feel on multiple devices. The devices are used completely differently. Amazon looks totally different on a mobile device than it does on the computer. There’s a reason for that.

I said:

If I respond in the “Comments” screen under the MY SITES menu it will not change the status of the of the original message in the “Notifications” pull down. It says orange. If I have responded it should change to reflect that status. Less confusing. And if I may, I’d like to add my vote for a choice in formats for the PC user. We chose you WP because of your lovely tools and interface for the serious bloggers in this world. We liked your robust blogging tools and choice of presentation. I am nearing the end of my free space and am poised to either buy in or jump ship. Please let us have a working format that supports us on the larger screen and makes our hard work shine!
WP has listened to their long time users in the past and we valued your services for that. Don’t let us down now!

Now that I think about it, why not include a little icon in the new notifications area that if one clicks on it, it links to the old notification pop out. You can call it “pop out” and that’s that. Makes everyone happy.
