Anyone else having problems with the New Notifications Layout

    @lauramackey – Yes! A perfect solution!

    Why does WordPress keep changing things to something worse? The new notifications features not only suck in design, they rarely work. I’ve had false positives and unreported comments from that stupid little bell so often, I’ve resorted to just hitting it automatically like a Reno slot machine–maybe I’ll get lucky.

    WordPress, instead of tinkering with what already works and adding crap we don’t need why not just ask us what we actually want? Then, your programmers’ time isn’t wasted and we don’t have to come here and vent our ire at you like civil rights protesters.

    @allthoughtswork — the slot machine is hysterical! But yes — quite appropriate. :)

    I am late to the notifications party here, as it were. I use an iPad and the notifications do not appear at all when I click any of the notifications icons in the top right-hand corner. All that happens is that an empty display area opens where the notifications used to appear.

    Also, possibly related, the “new” Stats page access doesn’t work at all on my iPad. It never did work when you first rolled it out, so I happily continued to access stats via the old link but now I see that you have removed that functioning Stats link and replaced it with the “new” Stats that does not work at all. Please put the original link back? I can kludge my way in via the old “dashboard” stats link, but that’s not very efficient.

    Lastly, the recent changes have made working in my blog very difficult – posts are “timing out” when I try to save drafts – giving an error stating I have lost connection ad unable to save HOWEVER I can open non-WordPress sites in another browser tab and they all respond as nimbly as ever indicating NO problem at all with my “connection.” Most attempts to do anything in my blog or even other WordPress pages – such as “liking” a post on a Daily Post page – are now slow as molasses, unworkably slow and/or crash my iPad. My take on the problem points to the new features being either too memory-intense or too graphics-intense.

    Thanks in advance for whatever help you can give me and my trusty iPad. Best, Bansje

    For the past three days, I’ve been experiencing a new glitch with the notifications feature.

    Once the tab lights up (no matter which page I’m on) it can take up to a full minutes for the actual notification to appear. If I click on the bell or the cross-in-a-circle, the orange indicator disappears, but there is no new notification.

    Refreshing the page does nothing. Sometimes, if I change pages (from my main blog page to the stats page, for example) I can find the new addition. Generally, I just have to wait.

    I’m a PC user, with Firefox and no addons, updated flash. And yes, I’ve go a nice, clear cache and etc.

    There may be some tinkering going on, but I thought I’d mention it.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I was just working on my private test blog and noticed the notifications tab was orange. Curious, I clicked on it. Now I have questions/issues:

    (1.) Why are all the notifications from my public blog showing up in the list on my private blog? Probably because the list is for my entire account, not a single blog, but I think the list should show only notifications for the blog I’m looking at (imagine the chaos if I had half a dozen blogs!)

    (2.) The top notification said “Your stats are booming! Looks like Pied Type (test blog) is getting lots of traffic.” First of all, don’t clutter the already messed-up TMI notifications list with unnecessary WP attaboy announcements. Second, why are you reporting traffic on a private blog where I’m the only user? Supposedly you don’t track or count our own visits to our own blogs.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @windwhistle

    . Second, why are you reporting traffic on a private blog where I’m the only user? Supposedly you don’t track or count our own visits to our own blogs.

    That’s not correct. Your own visits to your private blog are being recorded. http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/

    I’m with you on the rest of what you said. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Guess I didn’t exactly say what I was thinking. I knew my visits were recorded on my private blog. But if WP can distinguish between my visits and the visits of others (as on public blogs), then why is it issuing me an attaboy for what it knows are MY visits?

    Sheesh, I’m getting too old for this nonsense …

  • Unknown's avatar

    Uh oh, it gets worse. I just got ANOTHER attaboy notification about all the views (by me) I’m getting on my test blog. Evidently it’s going to happen every couple of hours as long as I’m working on that blog. Talk about unnecessarily cluttering the notifications list!

  • Unknown's avatar

    @windwhistle

    Sheesh, I’m getting too old for this nonsense

    Oh don’t crank me up on this please. Ageism is no excuse for anything. That said, the way we WordPress.COM guinea pigs have been treated as far as being surprised by repeated, unwelcome changes that make our blogging experience even more complicated and less enjoyable has been infuriating. I have gone from being a fan girl to outsider paying for upgrades and armed with baskets full of rotten of tomatoes. My improv comedy troupe has been exposed to all of my feedback delivered in private sarcastic stand-up performances and skits on a bi-weekly basis. Aside from those, I have stilled my tongue lest what I truly feel about this treatment appears online.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Constantly biting my tongue, too. Or what’s left of it.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Why don’t they just redesign their app and save all the people who like to blog from their PC the options to continue to do so? I have a tablet and a smart phone and I almost NEVER blog from them because I can’t stand the interface.

    The notification drop down menu used to let you add followers when you check your notifications. That option was not included in the new design. Now I have to go to their sites and hunt for the “add” button.

    This is just one of the many gripes I have with the dashboard and site layout. I Personally, I feel that the move toward a new “simple and clean” design has dropped some of the convenient features of WordPress. In the quest for simplicity to meet the needs of light bloggers who prefer to use their smartphones or tablets, more advanced options have been completely dropped and the serious bloggers lose out. It gets old hunting for features that have been hidden to get them off the dashboard or taken out altogether for simplicity’s sake. There is a roundabout way to continue using parts of the old dashboard, but it’s convoluted and who knows how long it will remain available.

    I’m also very unhappy with the stats page. I have to do a lot of scrolling and the convenient, visual comparison of visitors vs. views in the bar graph has been deleted. I also don’t like that I have to do a ton of scrolling to see the world map.

    It’s also annoying that I got scolding for posting this when I tried to find a thread similar to this on my smartphone, couldn’t and posted a new thread.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I don’t recommend literal tongue biting as it can be painful. ;) I recommend finding another avenue for self expression.

    When truly enraged I resort to comedy lest I choose to unleash my tongue in a more pointed way. You see my mother was closely related to if not the twin sister of the wicked witch of the west, and I was her unwitting understudy, as I was the eldest child in a large family. So my tongue can cut like a knife and leave scars even when I don’t deliberately set out to lash others with it. As the grim reaper has come thrice for me now, I’m intent on slaying my ego before I pass over. That is why I choose to make others laugh at what pisses me off these days, and it’s not an easy choice to make.

    @timethief Got it. Too bad I’ve never been much of a comic.

  • Unknown's avatar

    While using the notifications list yesterday, I clicked “trash” under a comment and instead of putting it in the Trash folder, it deleted it completely.

    My question is: is this what it is intended to do?

  • Unknown's avatar

    The overarching mystery to me is why they are changing at all what is invisible to people who view our blogs on the web. It’s just our own tools wich which to craft our blogs that they are tinkering with. It’s as if they were coming in and relocating keys on my keyboard, say, putting the space bar on the top, and deciding to streamline my mouse by getting rid of the right-click button. Why bother? Recently I’ve learned 2 new programs (Painter, and ArtRage), and at the same time, I fell like I’m learning a third, which is the new and much more convoluted version of WordPress.

  • Unknown's avatar

    The new notifications is gigantic onscreen, taking up an absurd amount of space. If I click on them, I no longer go directly to the post, as I expect. There is no longer a single click option to sort redirects into the trash. In every way that has any meaning to me, the current notification system is a downgrade. Please restore the function to what is was in late 2013 when I first came to WordPress and was happy with its simplicity, ease of use, and efficient use of screenspace.

    Hi everyone!

    Please see my responses below. Just a note, if you’re experiencing a specific issue with notifications (notifications not appearing, for example) or another feature (stats), please open a new thread. I’m doing my best to read through and respond to every post offering constructive criticism or reporting a bug here.

    @geoffwhaley

    Also thanks for treating us like morons. Many of us on here have used WordPress for years and are well aware there is a bulk comment editing feature, however the convenience of editing comments as they come in while you’re working on a blog or editing a page is incredibly valuable.

    It certainly wasn’t my intention to imply you were unfamiliar with WordPress.com. I was just pointing this out as an option.

    The fact that it’s almost impossible to get back to your administrative board from any of the new pages without going through 2-3 clicks is ridiculous. So much for usability and streamlining.

    To be clear, you’re referring to navigating through the new pages at the following link:

    https://wordpress.com/sites

    Not necessarily the new notifications. Is that correct?

    @kokkieH

    I just noticed that the comment reply box in the notifications drop-down doesn’t expand. It has the little triangle in the bottom-right corner indicating the box can be resized, but you can only make it wider (which is pointless as there is no space for that) while you can’t make it longer vertically, which is actually what we need to be able to do. As a result one can only see comment replies four lines at a time at this point. I’d appreciate you looking into that.

    Thanks for bringing this up. Reported!

    I just checked the “infinite scroll” after reading @justjennifer’s comments. In both Chrome 40 and Firefox 35 it only loads the last 50 notifications for me, so the “infinite scroll” is anything but. Of course, if the notifications archive link is brought back as has been requested many times, that won’t be an issue.

    Looking at the IS issue.

    1) notifications at least had a date-stamp in the main drop-down rather than the “Today”, “Yesterday”, “More than 2 days ago”, etc. it currently has

    Yep! We’re taking a look at adding a more specific timestamp.

    2) the feature was added back to show if you’ve replied to a comment. At the moment the interface indicates if you’ve read a comment, but there’s nothing to show if you’ve replied.

    Yep! Looking at this as well.

    @justjennifer

    In Chrome v40 on a PC, only about half of the notifications show up in the new area compared to what appears here https://wordpress.com/notifications No “infinite scroll” for me. Also, the same thing in Chrome v40 on my smartphone. Only about half the notifications appear.

    Thanks – digging into this as well. I’m only seeing 50 notifications right now as well. From my understanding, it should show 100. I’ll report back once I find out more.

    And on my smartphone (Android), as I reach the bottom of the notifications area, or even if I try to scroll while more notifications are loading, the top menu bar suddenly is replaced by the Reader.

    Could you let me know what browser you’re using? I’m experiencing some weirdness in Safari as well.

    @raechelshearttoheart

    i have no notifications at all when i click the box that turns orange or bell. no notification page will appear for 5 days…for at least 2 months, sometimes a day would go by and it would not work, but now it’s constantly/ google chrome…

    I went ahead and reached out to you privately. Let’s correspond back and forth there!

    @windwhistle

    I can’t figure out if there’s a single-click method to get to the original post and comments, which is where I prefer to respond to comments — in context — since they are usually part of a running conversation.

    You will need to use the blue link here:

    http://d.pr/i/1fCZz

    I can’t tell at a glance which notifications I’ve already seen, and I can’t dismiss or close the ones I have seen.

    We’re working on clarifying this. Currently, items with a blue background are new/unviewed. Items with a white background are viewed.

    The up and down arrows don’t just open and close the list, they jump you to different views or something.

    The up and down arrows (shown here: http://d.pr/i/QS9j) will jump you to the next comment in the list or the previous comment.

    New entries, comments, Likes, don’t always appear at the top of the list; sometimes they pop up way down on the list where I’m not going to be looking — unless maybe I overlooked them before.

    Hmm…a new notification on a post should always pop that back to the top of the notifications window. Could you take a screenshot of this next time it happens? I’ll continue to try to recreate this in the meantime.

    And why on earth would you clutter the list with notifications of my own self-pings?

    Self-pings act like any other ping on your blog so they will show up in your notifications.

    Why are all the notifications from my public blog showing up in the list on my private blog? Probably because the list is for my entire account, not a single blog, but I think the list should show only notifications for the blog I’m looking at (imagine the chaos if I had half a dozen blogs!)

    When you’re anywhere on WordPress.com, you will receive notifications from all of your blogs, not just the blog you’re on.

    The top notification said “Your stats are booming!

    As Timethief explained, you will be counted as a visitor on a private blog. It sounds like your own views caused that stats notification. When you’re viewing your own private blog, you can set-off the “Stats are booming” notification.

    @pixilated2

    If I respond in the “Comments” screen under the MY SITES menu it will not change the status of the of the original message in the “Notifications” pull down. It says orange. If I have responded it should change to reflect that status. Less confusing.

    Thanks for clarifying! I’m testing this at the moment.

    @babsjeheron

    Hi Bansje – I’ll be reaching out to you privately as well.

    The Follow button should still be visible when you’re looking at individuals who have liked your post like this:

    http://d.pr/i/1jxAh

    Is that popping up on your side?

    It’s also annoying that I got scolding for posting this when I tried to find a thread similar to this on my smartphone, couldn’t and posted a new thread.

    I’m not sure what post you’re referencing here, but I apologize if a response of mine appeared as though I were scolding you. Definitely not my intention at all!

    @dandelionsalad

    While using the notifications list yesterday, I clicked “trash” under a comment and instead of putting it in the Trash folder, it deleted it completely. My question is: is this what it is intended to do?

    When I just tried this, the comment went into the trash folder of my site. For you, the comment is still being deleted completely. Is that correct?
