Anyone having trouble uploading images?

  • Unknown's avatar

Over the past couple of months, I have increasing difficulty uploading image files from my computer to my main blog (http://vanessafrance.wordpress.com). It takes forever and sometimes all I get is an error message – ‘HTTP error’. I am using Google Chrome as my browser. Often it stalls at the crunching stage and nothing happens. I have cleared the cache, changed the format of my images, etc etc but nothing works.
We are not on broadband here – have a satellite connection via Nordnet. Is that the problem?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you using the https:// login?
Or are you using the http:// login?

    I haven’t a clue. Does it make a difference?

I’ve logged out and in again and it appears to he https but I don’t seem to have a choice in the matter…
I’d be grateful for any help. It is taking hours to upload photos sometimes and I am starting to lose the will to live. Considering closing this blog down – life is too short.

I’m sorry this is happening to you. i think you may have a connectivity issue but I could be wrong. I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

    Okay, thanks for your help.

I’ve been having the same problem. No problems since starting the blog until the past couple of days. I have been unable to upload images and get a message that says: “Error” – “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later”. But “later” never comes. I am using Safari and tried clearing cache, cookies and history, and the URL is http://whereintheworldarecindyandbill.com .

Would you like to undertake some troubleshooting so we can eliminate any browser related issues as a cause?

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

If it’s still happening, let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

I have followed all your instructions above (for which many thanks). By 11 pm (CET) yesterday I was finally able to upload the 3 images I wanted but it was still very slow and it has been blocking today on and off. So it’s still a problem.

It may be connectivity via our ISP (satellite) but it’s only been going on for a couple of months – no problem with uploading images before.

I am using Google Chrome version 27.0.1453.94 m, which is up to date.

The error messages I’ve been getting are as follows:

If I try the multi-file uploader I get “HTTP error”

If I try the browser uploader I get “error 502”

Sometimes I simply get a message that “the server hasn’t sent any data” or it just hangs and does nothing.

    Thanks for your help.

Most people reporting problems like this who are using Chrome find that by switching to the https version of the site their problems are solved. http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

Thanks, raincoaster – I have already done that and it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Many thanks to timethief! I switched to https:// (from http://) and my problem is resolved!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hooray! Thanks for persevering and also for letting us know the issue has been resolved. Happy blogging!

Well, I’m glad billsinger1’s problem is resolved but…I started this thread and mine isn’t.

I’m so sorry about that and I have tagged this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

@nessafrance, have you tried using a different browser, uploading from a different computer or at a different location? Also, what is the average file size of your image files?

I, too, have been having difficult uploading images, I am using Google iOS 5.1.1 on my IPad and there are no available updates as I have checked. When I first started using WordPress I had no problem, but then when I downloaded the update, I started having problems. I get the following message: “The web browser on your device cannot be used to upload files. You may be able to use the native app for your device instead.” This happens on both the app and the website. I followed all the suggestions above, but havent been successful. I am able to upload images from the library. any suggestions?

@jackiedana, thanks for the reply. I started off with IE as my browser but changed to Chrome because of problems with web pages not displaying properly in IE. It’s difficult for me to upload from a different location since we are out in the sticks but I’ll try it when I get an opportunity and see if it works. That would then point to connectivity problems here (we are on a satellite connection).

Re the image size, I always compress my images before uploading. As I said, I have only been having this problem for the past couple of months. I’ve had a WP blog for more than 3 years.

@nessafrance, because you are successfully (albeit painfully) uploading images, I would like to see if a different connection will improve things for you. Satellite ISPs are notorious at throttling upload bandwidth.

@csinger13, when you say you downloaded the update, which update are you referring to? The WordPress app or something else? Are you trying to upload images through a browser connection on the iPad or through the WordPress app?

  • Unknown's avatar

I downloaded the WordPress updated probably around 4 weeks ago +/-. I have tried uploading images through both, a browser connection on the IPad and through the WordPress app and get the same message in both cases.
