Api key (didn’t found the reply in the faq)

    Hi,
I have a wordpress blog on my own space at altervista.org. I’d like to activate the askimet plugin because i’m getting loads of spam, but in the dashboard on my blog at altervista there is no api key. So i created a username at wordpress.com and now i have a api key, but if i use it and put it on my blog in altervista it doesn’t work. Can you help me resolving this please?
    Thanks anyway.

You need to be over at the WordPress.org forums; we’re running different software here and can’t help you.

Actually I believe that all Akismet API key questions are supposed to come to this forum so I’ll bump this to drmike.

Please define “doesn’t work.” Are you getting an error or what?

If you’re getting something like the API isn’t valid, 99.9% of the time it’s because your host has turned off port 80 access from your box so Akismet is unable to make the call out to Akismet’s servers to verify the key. Please get with them and see if they can allow post 80 outbound, the use of fopen within PHP, (some hosts turn that off as well since some consider it to be a security risk) or at least whitelist *.akismet.com and/or rest.akismet.com

    Hope this helps,
    -drmike
