API Key Doesn’t Work Woth WordPress.com Stats Plug-In
-
Whenever I tell WordPress.Com Stats my API key to activate it, I get this error:
“Error from last API Key attempt:
Bad site URL (hostname invalid or unsupported)”
I copied and pasted the key directly from my Word Press profile. Please help.

Copied from elsewhere in the forum search box – and also mainly in the Akismet faq:
Your key will be correct.
The error message is because Akismet cannot access the Akismet server. The problem is one of these things:
– either Akismet is being denied access to the internet if you are hosted locally behind a firewall (Ensure that your host can make outgoing HTTP requests to akismet.com. (Many hosts block or firewall outgoing connections.) or
– the server you are on lacks the ‘fopen’ function which Akismet needs to work

I have a similar problem. I use my API password for Akismet. Then when I tried to enter it into WordPress.com Stats and push save it still gives me “WordPress.com Stats needs attention: please enter an API key or disable the plugin.” I think it’s not recognizing my API password at all.

Have you read the first response to the original post in this thread?
Ensure that your host can make outgoing HTTP requests to akismet.com. Many hosts block or firewall outgoing connections or – the server you are on lacks the ‘fopen’ function which Akismet needs to work
Have you contacted your host?
Are you getting an error message?
If so what exactly does it say? -
Here is my exact error when I use my api key. I’m currently using the api key with akismet and tried to use the same api key with WordPress Stats.
You are not a member of this blog.
If you have just installed the Automattic Stats plugin, this error probably appeared because the API key entered in the plugin belongs to a different WordPress.com user account.
* Have the owner of the API key visit this page and add you to the blog, or
* Get your API key here, then deactivate and activating the plugin and enter your key to add your account to the access list for this blog. -
I am having the exact same problem. API key works for Akismet, not for Blog Stats. I’m using WordPress 2.3.

Taken from Mark’s post to another forum thread.
This is what staff need when you contact them requesting help.
– your operating system
– your browser
– your browser version
– your FULL blog address (not the name, the real address that begins http:// )
– your FULL username
– your REAL email address that is registered here
– and a very good description of the exact problemHere’s the link to contact staff during working hours http://wordpress.com/contact-support/

I have been having the same problem as “yaoke” and “first50” for a long time and am getting really annoyed to not find an answer for this. Is anyone from WordPress going to address this question?
-
From other post on this topic it doesn’t sound like any of the moderators or WordPress has an answer to this problem. I have two external blogs and Akismet and Stats works fine for my first blog but on my second blog Akismet works but stats will not accept the API key. This forum and the one on WordPress.org is full of other post and yet there is no answer. I have changed the passwords for all my blogs and my profile on WordPress.com and that doesn’t work. I just had to Deactivate the WordPress Stats for my second blog.
