API KEY for akismet
-
Can I generate an API key from my WP.com account and then use it on a blog that a developer created for me with a seperate WP installation not related to this WP.com account?

Each WordPress.com account has one API key that is automatically generated for the account. You can use your API key for as many blogs as you want. See the “Where is my WordPress.com API key?” help page to learn more about it.

I think my question is similar. I have a blog that is hosted elsewhere: http://www.xxxxx.com/blog that needs an API key. When I log onto that blog simply using my user/password combination. However, it has no API key in my profile. However, I created a user profile for xxxxx.wordpress.com and now have an API key. This second WordPress address is unrelated to my wordpress blog that is hosted elsewhere. Can I still use the API key for that unrelated blog (www.xxxxx.com/blog)?

Yes – your API key is on your WordPress.com profile. You can use that on any blogs you own. The API key does not appear on the profile page of your self-hosted blogs, it appears only on your WordPress.com profile.

Thanks tellyworth. I will try it. Does that mean that WordPress essentially considers it as two seperate entities? What is the purpose of the API key, anyway?

The API key is necessary for Akismet and WordPress stats to work securely. It works like a password to identify you and your blog, and prevents others from claiming to be you.
Self-hosted blog user accounts are entirely separate from WordPress.com user accounts.
