The blogs here at wordpress.com are all hosted by wordpress. This is the only information I could find in the FAQs http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/10/19/api-key/
and this came from the forum search box http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=5877&replies=22#post-38060

Timethief, that FAQ does not discuss a broken Akismet key. Please do not point folks to FAQs when they don’t solve the question asked.

j4l4ni, please remember that the Akismet service is being provided to your free of charge and any rudeness is uncalled for and does not make for a good impression especially when you’re new and you tell us to check a key without giving us any reference to what key you’re discussing. Please remember that.

The keys are generated by the Akismet software. They work. The only time when they don’t work is when you’ve been passing out the key to others, you’re using it in a commerical setup without permission or lisencing, or there’s an issue with your host. 99.9% of the time, the issue is with the host. Please check with them to see that the fopen PHP command is available on your box. Many hosts incorrectly block it in an attempt to make a server more secure. Also please inquire to see if port 80 is open in an outbound direction.

    Hope this helps,
    -drmike

    @drmike
Your correction has been noted and I will abide by it. I assure you that I can provide a canned answer like “send in a feedback” with the best of them *lol*. What’s more is that you have just provided an answer I can copy and paste or point to the next time this comes up. Cool …

The blogger was new and the likelihood he had actually done any searching at all was nada to zilch based on past experience. At least now he knows where the FAQs and the forum search box are and that they are tools that can be used to answer questions. He also knows that his problem was not covered in it. Now that’s always worthwhile mentioning in a feedback to staff, isn’t it?

I was polite, honest and forthcoming in my answer to the blogger : “This is the only information I could find in the FAQs … and this came from the forum search box …”

If I had been told the above by a fellow blogger I would have been grateful that they took the time to do my searching and reading for me and somewhat chagrined. The next thing I would have expressed would have been: Thanks but this doesn’t fit my situation so, how do I solve this now? :)

I would not have become rude and abusive but maybe that’s because I’m a girl … hmmm … I’m really glad to see you’re making it clear that rudeness will not be tolerated on the forum. You see I’m keeping a record of abusive bloggers and so far only men have made it onto the s*** list … hmmm … now that’s worth pondering isn’t it?

The answer is partly in the Akismet faq.
Here is what I would reply with:

    Your key will be correct.

The error message is because Akismet cannot access the Akismet server. The problem is one of three things:
    – either Akismet is being denied access to the internet if you are hosted locally behind a firewall, or
    – the server you are on lacks the ‘fopen’ function which Akismet needs.
    – your host might need to know that the default-installed SELinux security precautions (on Fedora4) causes this problem. With SELinux disabled, it works.
    – ask your host if they mod_chroot enabled. If they do, that is what has caused Akismet not to work. They will be able to advise on what they can do for you.
    – There could be another environment variable which we are not yet aware of (because these things change so much)
Do talk to your host and see if there is anyway they can help.

Sometimes people just slip on the wrong pair of undies in the dark and misinterpret feelings……and sometimes being a bitch is just a release mechanism.

techpeace, but yet you’ve been here for a total of eight hours and lecture me on rudeness. Maybe you should look at what you’re saying as well as take a look around here at the work I put in. If it’s a “common error” as you say, it’s the first I’ve seen it. But I also know how to run my boxes.

Oh, by the way. Your ISP supports child porn and hosts websites promoting and selling it, has for years, and refuses to do anything about the issue. By giving them your money, you support that as well. Think about that.

    Rudeness gets deleted.

    ’nuff said.
