api key needed for my own hosted blog

I have installed wordpress software onto my own website, and need to obtain an api key to activate the stats plugin. I was told I needed to create a wordpress.com account to get my api key. So, I have created my account in wordpress.com (different details to my own site login) and got an api key. When I entered this to activate the stats plugin on my own site, it said this api key was already associated with at least one self hosted blog. It can’t be though, because nowhere during the login process for wordpress.com did I enter any details for my own site. Nor can I see where to. When I try to add a new blog to my account (the only option on the page), it says that there is an error with the api key. This is extremely confusing. I just want to get an api key for wordpress on my own hosted site. Please help!

I think you need to ask this over at wordpress.org.

This explains where you will find your API key here at wordpress.com: http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/10/19/api-key/
