App downloaded 1.66GB Over The Air without permission
-
Using the latest version of the app on a Samsung Galaxy A3(6). My apps are set to only update over wifi. Today during work the WP app downloaded 1.66gb over the air while unattended, (blowing through my data cap incidentally).
I’m very concerned (and annoyed) about this, and would like to troubleshoot or understand the cause.
I’ve been using the app through its various revisions since initial release and nothing similar previously happened.

Hi there,
You are correct, this shouldn’t happen.
I asked one of our mobile developers about this, and the only way the app could use that much data is if you loaded a post in the Reader that contained embedded video. But if you were not using the app that is unlikely.
On your phone, go to Settings ->Apps, select the WordPress app, and tap on Data Usage. Can you check if it shows that data as Foreground or Background data?
There should also be a toggle button for Background data. You can deactivate that to prevent the app from using any data at all while it’s not the active app on your screen.
Lastly, it might help if we can view your app’s logs. Open the app and tap the profile option. Tap Help and Support, and tap the Application Log button. Copy everything that appears, and email it to us at help[at]wordpress.com. Please include a link to this thread in your email, and let me know here as well once you’ve sent it. Then we can take a look and see if we can figure out what happened.

Thanks for response.
Checking the app data usage, there was a 1.64GB data spike yesterday (1.66 was the whole). It was background data.
I do not have a toggle for app data in settings. There is a View App Settings box…which is greyed out and unavailable.
I’ve sent the application log, which only seems to cover the last minute for 60 odd, so I doubt it will be useful, but hey, you’re the experts.

Thanks for sending the logs. they might show us if the app on your phone is making network requests that’s not necessary, even if it doesn’t show the exact request that led to the data being used.
I see you gave your phone model in the email, but can you please give the Android version as well? You’ll find that in the About Phone section of your phone’s settings.
