App JUST OPENS A CHROME WINDOW

  • Unknown's avatar

Really frustrated with the app right now. When I open it, it pauses and never shows my site. Then it opens a Chrome window to my site.

If I wanted to write in the messy backend, I wouldn’t use the app. I am using it on Windows 10 and just downloaded the latest version. No fix.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • That’s odd.

Just to be clear, is https://themontanapost.com/ the site with the problem? I’m also not seeing anything that would cause this there.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yep.
And I just downloaded the update and it just doesn’t open at all.

  • Thanks. Did this issue just recently start?

And do you have any programs that would have been installed or updated recently?

    Also, can you clarify this?

If I wanted to write in the messy backend, I wouldn’t use the app.

Yes, I clarify. Writing in the wordpress backed is a nightmare. It’s cluttered and busy.

I have updated to the latest version of the app and have the same problem on both my PC and Mac. Instead of opening up a clean, local editing window, it just opens the backend screen.

  • I’m still not sure what you mean by the backend screen. Could you get a full screenshot, then upload it to https://wordpress.com/media and update us here?

I guess I don’t understand what is complicated about this.

The WordPress App used to, when I opened it, provide a clean interface to write in my desktop. Now it opens the screen I would see if I went here:
    https://themontanapost.com/wp-admin/

  • @dpogreba this is difficult for us to look into on our end since this is the support forum for WordPress.com sites, and not for the app specifically. Can you please contact app support directly by tapping your profile, then the “Help & Support” option inside the app?

When you ask for help inside the app, it contacts our app support team directly, and also passes on troubleshooting logs along with your request so we can get to the root of the issue faster there.

    Thanks!

Honestly, my guess is this is the way the app works now. It’s a terrible design decision. The entire point of the app was to have a clean composing and editing screen. I can’t imagine the point of an app that replicates the browser experience.

And I can’t even find a forum for the desktop app.

I see one for the ios and android versions. Is there one for the desktop version?

  • Apologies for not catching that this is the desktop app (I did not see until now that you mentioned Windows 10 in your initial query)

Can you walk us through how it is you are getting to “When I open it, it pauses and never shows my site. Then it opens a Chrome window to my site.”

For example, is this something that happens after you publish a page or blog post on your site, and then try to either “preview” or visit it directly? Something else? Does it happen as soon as you launch the app, or only when performing specific tasks?

Also I noticed you have many sites on your account, including some “WordPress.com sites” and also some “Jetpack sites” that are hosted with another provider, but connected to your account via the Jetpack plugin. Is this an issue that affects all of your sites? Or is it an issue when working with just a specific site (or sites) but other sites are fine and don’t cause issues?

    Thanks for the additional info!

I appreciate the response, but the frustration just keeps getting more pronounced. Half the time, when I click on the WordPress desktop app it just doesn’t load at all.

The rest of the time, instead of the old, simple composing screen, it takes me to the administrator backend of the site, sometimes in a browser window and sometimes in both the browser window and inside the app itself.

When it does load properly, it is going to my themontanapost.com site, which is Jetpack enabled.

What I really want is somewhere where I can download an old version of the app.

  • Hi there,

Can you please try one last thing? I want you to reinstall the app following these steps:

    1. Uninstall the app by using a program like Revo Uninstaller (Windows) or AppCleaner (macOS). Those programs will completely uninstall the app and delete any leftover files.

    2. Go to the Security page on your WordPress.com account and under the Connected Apps tab disconnect the WordPress.com Desktop App. Here’s a direct link to that page:

    https://wordpress.com/me/security/connected-applications

    3. Install the WordPress.com app again and re-connect your site or account.

The same thing. When I hit “Write,” it opens a browser window.
    https://themontanapost.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=post

I just can’t understand what the purpose of the app is if it replicates the browser experience. The joy of the WordPress.com app was the ability to write a post free of distractions on the desktop.

Does anyone know whether old versions are available for download?

    Thanks.

  • That’s definitely odd and not expected.

Does the same thing happen if you attempt to edit a post?

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t know that you entirely understand what is happening. I open the app, go to themontanapost.com and it opens the backend (wp-admin) on a post screen in Chrome. There is no chance to edit a post.

It’s like the app has just turned into a wrapper for a browser window.

Can someone PLEASE point me to an archived version of the app that works as it used to?

  • I noticed that you mentioned this as an issue with your self-hosted site themontanapost.com, which is hosted at Nexcess Hosting, yes?

I see that site is connected to the WordPress.com app via the Jetpack plugin you added to that site, and one thing I noticed on that site is that it has the “Classic Editor” plugin installed, and we no longer offer the classic editor within WordPress.com directly.

This is not a change in the app, but a change in how WordPress.com handles the classic editor now that it is retired in favor of the newer block editor.

You can of course continue to use the classic editor on your self-hosted WordPress site, but the only way to access that editor is within wp-admin. If your site is set to use the classic editor then any pages you attempt to create or edit within the app would redirect you to wp-admin in the browser.

If you prefer to not be redirected to wp-admin when working within the app, you will need to disable the classic editor plugin on themontanapost.com and use the block editor instead.
