  Yes, you can display widgets in the optional sidebar widget area on the Dara theme. The “Widget Areas” section of the Dara theme guide (or “Overview”) says:

  Dara offers four widget areas:

  • The optional Sidebar, which appears on the right in blog view and on pages using the default template.
  • Three optional Footer widget areas.

  So, on the Dara theme, in order to display widgets in the optional widget area on a static front page, you must assign the Default template to the page. The other template options are “Full Width, No Sidebar” and “Grid Page.”
