Appearance changed and functionality poor

  • Unknown's avatar

On my PC the appearance of my blog has changed. When I view from another computer or tablet it looks as it should. On my PC I am unable to upload new media and general functionality is poor.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

It looks like the site is loading correctly for me in the latest version of Chrome and Firefox. Since the site is appearing correctly on another computer and on a tablet, I suspect this might be a local issue with your computer. Could you let me know what browser version you’re using? You can find out by visiting the following link:

    http://whatismybrowser.com

Also, can you try clearing your browser’s cache?

    Solve Common Browser Issues

Lastly, have you tried logging out and back in on your PC?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

Browser is Firefox 37 on Windows 7.
I have cleared the Cache and it has not made any difference.
Yes have logged out and back in several times.
Everything is working fine on this PC if I use Google Chrome.
    Thanks for your support.

Thanks for clarifying! Since it’s working fine in Chrome, I suspect this might be a Firefox-only issue. Can you try resetting Firefox as instructed here?

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems

Just a note, this resets the following items:

Extensions and themes, website permissions, modified preferences, added search engines, download history, DOM storage, security settings, download actions, plugin settings, toolbar customizations, user styles and social features will be removed.

    Hi
I have done the reset and it hasn’t made any difference. As you say it seems to be a Firefox issue as all okay on Chrome, my mobile and my partners ipad.
    Thanks again for your time.

Could you upload a screenshot of what you’re seeing in Firefox (regarding the appearance)? I’d like to take a look. You can grab a screenshot using the instructions here:

    Take a Screenshot

Once you’ve grabbed the screenshot, you can upload it to your Media Library (perhaps using Chrome if Firefox isn’t working). Then, reply back here, and I’ll take a look!

  • Unknown's avatar

Have uploaded the pictures to media library but how do I load them onto here for you to see them?

  • Unknown's avatar

I can see them in your Media Library. You don’t need to upload them elsewhere. Checking out the images, it looks like Firefox isn’t loading the CSS file (that styles the page) for your site.

Can you try loading the following page in Firefox and let me know if it appears similar (just text, no styling)?

    https://jeremeyduvall.wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

Have loaded it and it looks the same as mine.
Love the pictures by the way.

Have loaded it and it looks the same as mine.

Perfect! This helps to narrow down the issue just a bit. It seems like this isn’t a connection or caching issue since loading a new page (jeremeyduvall.wordpress.com) produced a similar result. Instead, it looks like this might be a setting of some sort.

    A few additional questions:

    1. Under Tools > Add-ons/Extensions, do you have anything installed in Firefox?

    2. Have you ever installed any themes into Firefox? Do you remember adjusting the styling at any point?

I’m trying to recreate this in my version of Firefox, but I’m having trouble figuring out exactly what setting is causing this.

  • Unknown's avatar

1 No Add-ons or extensions that I can see. Screen print of add-on page in my media library.

2 Never knowingly installed any themes to firefox

  • Unknown's avatar

Yep – it doesn’t look like you’ve installed any add-ons. Can you try opening up WordPress.com in a private window? You should see this option under “File” as shown here:

Lastly, can you visit http://www.whatismybrowser.com/ and take a screenshot of the results and upload it to your Media Library?

  • Unknown's avatar

Same result in a Private Window
    Two screenshots in media library

    Hi there,

Can you please try opening these three links and see if they load?

If each page loads correctly, you should see a bunch of text (CSS code) there. That’s the code that gives WordPress.com sites the correct styles and formatting, which is what’s missing when you view WordPress.com sites.

If one or more of those links doesn’t open for you, please let me know — that could indicate a connection issue between your computer and the WordPress.com servers that load those styles on your site.

  • Unknown's avatar

All three opened in the same way. I have added a screen print of one of them to my media library.

    Hi there,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you about this. According to what you saw at those links your browser is able to access the styles for your site, so it’s very puzzling why those styles aren’t being loaded on your site when you use Firefox.

Can you please follow the instructions on this troubleshooting page to get the HTTP headers when you visit your site in Firefox:

    Advanced Browser Troubleshooting

That will help us understand what is keeping those styles from loading when you visit your site.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

No problem, appreciate your time sorting this out.

    Five new screenshots added.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks! Your wp7.jpg screenshot shows that something is blocking the styles from being loaded at all when you visit your site, but it isn’t entirely clear why Firefox is blocking them.

At this stage, the quickest way to try to resolve this may be to uninstall Firefox completely and then reinstall it. That will wipe out any stray settings in Firefox that haven’t already been reset.

If you’d prefer, I can check a few other things before you do that. (I just don’t want to make you continue to troubleshoot this if reinstalling Firefox may resolve it for you and you’re ok doing that.)

If you want to keep investigating this, the next thing that will help is to go back to Tools → Web Developer → Network and load your site again. Then, you can click on the orange triangles next to s1.wp.com and s2.wp.com (the ones you see in the wp7.jpg screenshot). That will bring up a Security tab with more details about the issues specific to those domains, to explain why your Firefox browser isn’t loading them.
