Appearance in the reader

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello there,
I’ve noticed that the appearance of my blog posts in the reader is far from satisfactory. Either no image shows (which is fairly important for photography) or they look squashed or fuzzy.

My regular format is a slice of text and a gallery, only rarely do I put individual images straight into post. Here’s the latest:

    Gulf sunrise

It looks as if I should consider an initial large image followed by the gallery to feed the reader properly, although pushing the gallery further down the post is not ideal. Any further advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks,

    With best wishes,
    Michael

I’m having same problem. My post today did not go to the Reader at all. As a result, I haven’t received any likes or comments, which is very unusual. Did something in the format change (such as the grouping of posts) that caused some not to show up at all? I clicked on Chat but the person was not helpful.

    @lifeandheartmatters
That is not the same issue and we discourage thread jacking here. Please post your own thread by using the Add New Topic link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

  • Hi Mike, I’ll pass your feedback along. Right now, based on feedback and testing, we are showing a more compact view in the reader stream. If one clicks through to view the post in the reader, they’ll see the photos in a more normal size, otherwise we do use smaller thumbnails.

That said, we do normally show a few thumbnails if you’re using a gallery. I’m wondering if your gallery icons are a bit too small. Would you be willing to try a different gallery format with the next post – one with slightly larger images — to see whether that helps? You might like Tiled Columns or Mosaic.

Hi Supernovia, many thanks for your response.

I could certainly experiment with a larger gallery format with the next post. I have done in the past, but my instinct is that is doesn’t encourage readers to click through a gallery. The small format is the most effective ‘taster’, perhaps.

In the old style reader, there was never any issue with image pick-up – the first on the page would always be displayed very well. But I appreciate that things have changed.

My latest post showed a real downturn in WordPress user likes via the reader, presumably because it was text-only which I don’t believe has happened before. I’m happy to try anything out to help this.

Thank you again for your help – much appreciated.

    With best wishes,
    Mike

  • Thank you. Let us know what you find.

One thought – would a standalone image beneath the gallery be scooped up and fed into the reader? I’ve done this before. Unfortunately I don’t check the reader every time. Thanks, Supernovia.

  • @mikeosbornphoto I *believe* if there’s a gallery it’s supposed to use that. I have confirmed though that if the images are too small in the gallery, it won’t use them.

Also if it helps, I’ve been troubleshooting by looking at your feed here:
    https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/34465787

I noticed the ones that do show images tend to show that big image you’re including sometimes.

RE: whether the users are more likely to click on tiny thumbnails vs somewhat larger thumbnails, you might do some tests for a while to see if there’s a measurable difference.
