Appearance of blog email notification to followers.
-
I don’t like how my blog appears when it is received by my email followers. Can’t it go to them with just my blog header and the title and picture for each post? Then they can click on it for more and be taken to my entire blog page. I have seen other blogs like this. how do I do it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
There are indeed some work arounds which you can do, depending on exactly how you want things to look.
First, you can change your settings (in your Dashboard >> Settings >> Reading) to not provide the Full Text, only provide the Summary in feeds. That setting can apply to email as well.
Next, you can also make use of the Excerpt feature. On each of your posts, right under the compost window is a second small window where you can compose a small snippet which describes what the post is about. If you just provide one or two sentences about your post, that is what will be sent to your readers rather than the full article.
Unfortunately I don’t know of any way to send just a photo and nothing else.
-
I can’t find the Excerpt feature. Where is the compost window referred to by the happiness engineer?
-
I apologize, that should have said “compose” rather than “compost.” It is your visual editor window that is available when you go to your Dashboard and then to Posts >> Add new.
If the Excerpt window is not immediately visible, then you might need to enable it for your blog. To do so, while on the Add New post page, in the upper right hand corner of your screen there is a tab which says “Screen Options.” Open that and then check the box next to “Excerpt.” Once you have checked that, you’ll need to navigate away from the page (I usually just click on All Posts) and then click Add new again, and the Excerpts box should be right there beneath the compose window.
Let me know if you have any questions!

I did as you indicated but the compose box does identify itself as Excerpt – it looks like another new post. If I type in an excerpt there how do I connect it to the post I want the follower to read?
-
I found the Excerpt box.
Question: When I put a few lines of text in the Excerpt box will it automatically insert “More” or “Read More” in the email followers receive?
-
One more question:
Will the Excerpt that goes out to email followers include my blog header?
If not, how can I get the header to show? -
Hi there,
Yes, the excerpt will automatically insert a link: “Read more of this post”. As for your last question, do you mean a header image, or the title of your post? It does include the title of your post automatically, but it does not include the image header.
-
I mean my header image which has wine glasses and a fireplace. Can a reduced version of my header also be included? My brother-in-law’s blog with WordPress always shows his header when an email notification goes out. His blog name is: DavidStockmansContraCorner.

There are a couple of issues at work there. First, your brother-in-law’s blog is a self-hosted WordPress.org site rather than a WordPress.com site. There are a few differences between the two (which you can read about here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/) but amongst them is that through the use of plugins you can use different services for your notifications, such as MailChimp, etc.
I just went and found your brother-in-law’s site and did a test subscription and just from the verification email I can see that he is not using WordPress’ default notification system. If you would like to have your email notifications look like his, you will need to set up a self-hosted WordPress.org site and discuss with him what system he has set up within his blog.

Thanks for the info. I kinda figured he had someone doing the backroom work for him. I guess I won’t get that elaborate.
Question for clarification:
When I put a picture at the beginning of my post – – will it be included in the notification of the post? -

Yes, it will as long as you have your settings set to send the full text. If it is just set to send the summary then only a brief excerpt of text will be sent out with no images or media of any kind.
-
That’s too bad. Please encourage decision-makers at WordPress to rethink this option. If I can only send an image with my full text post, then there will be no need for my email followers to go to my blog page. I want them to go to my blog page because I have other items there for them to view.
On the other hand, if I can’t send an image with a summary of my post, the chances of my email followers clicking to my blog are REDUCED.
It looks like you have two options for me and neither of them are conducive to getting the email follower to go to my blog page — what is the point of having a blog page if my posts don’t entice followers to go there?????????????
Images entice readers to click to the source for more!!! Please change this – – if you really are interested in assisting bloggers. Thank you.

We actually have a suggestions forum which is reviewed by our developers and any suggestions of merit or which grabs their attention are put on our roadmap and implemented in future versions of WordPress.com.
You can add the suggestion right here:

I hope that helps!
