  I would like the titles (links to?) of my previous posts to appear on the right hand side of the page of each post. I have no idea how to do that because, I suspect, I don’t have the vocabulary to understand what tool I must use to accomplish that.

  The tme you are using is Manifest and it does not have sidebars. It has only footer areas for widgets. I suggest you switch to a theme that does have a right hand sidebar http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/right-sidebar/ and install the Recent Posts widget in it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/recent-posts-widget/
