Appearance of Responsive Theme

Hi, I’m using the Responsive Theme. I really like the preview layout of the home page. There is a box in the center where you can add content and media and a Call to Action button. And, then I see three columns beneath that, with photo/blurb, which are actually another way to access the pages of the site. I figured out how to do the Main box using the Full Width Template. However, I can’t seem to figure out how to get the pages beneath that home page box.

Right now, it is in Private mode while I work on it.

    Thanks!

    Hi there!

The three columns you mention are actually widget areas. You can add things to these areas through the Widget editor in your Customizer. If you’d like to display links to your Pages in one or more of these areas, you may be interested in the Custom Menu Widget.

You can read more about setting up the Responsive theme here:

Let me know if I can help further!

    Hi Shawna,
Thanks for replying. I played around with the widgets and menus as you suggested. All I could manage was to get the footer to show the page titles, but they are not in widget form. It looks more like tabs underneath the content block.

At one point, I thought I got the widgets to work, but not in the order that is displayed in the preview, where they are arranged vertically, left, middle, right. Instead, they were stacked horizontally, one under the other, beneath the content block.

The other problem I had (when I could get the widget form) is getting the widgets to display the content of the pages that I want with an image/blurb. I tried the link to my pages as you suggested, but nothing shows up. Perhaps that is because everything is disable due to my site being private while I work on it?

Thanks in advance for any more help you can give,
    Kate

    Hello!

Sorry about that. I overlooked one step. In order for the front page format to be displayed, you’ll need to create a new page and apply the “Home Template” under page attributes.

Then you’ll need to set that pages as your front page under Settings > Reading.

    Set the Homepage

Thanks Shawna. With your awesome help, I figured out how to get the three widgets to display content and images!

But, now I’m having trouble with the Home Content box. I want to have an image on the right-hand side, and content directly across from image, on the left-hand side, with a Call to Action button — just like it is in the theme preview.

However, there seems to be a margin halfway in the content box when I use the Home template, so that the image and content are squished either to the left or the right, leaving one half of the content box totally blank.

I tried different alignments of the image to no avail. When I use the full-width template, this issue is rectified, yet I lose the three widgets below the content box!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Kate

I see what you mean. In order to set up your home page content to look the way the demo does you’ll need to set the included image as that Page’s Featured Image.

And you’ll want to remove that image from the post itself. It should display correctly then!

Let me know if you have more questions! :)

    Hi Shawna,

Would you believe I think I have it squared away finally?! Yikes, that was crazy, but I learned a lot. Thanks so much for your help; you were quite patient. :)
