Appearance/columns of front page – want to see second page too
-
Hello, please would someone help me? I’ve been trying to work this out for days but can’t. New to blogging.
My blog was originally formatted like this (my cousin’s blog):
http://thecasiodiaries.wordpress.com/
By that, I mean it appears there are two columns: the blogs on the left and the second column broken into two sections with the second page visible at the top and widgets at the bottom.
This is what I want my blog to look like. However, I have mucked it up somehow. My blog is:
http://chroniclesofaserialdater.wordpress.com/
My blog has two columns: the blogs on the left with widgets on the right. However, it no longer shows my second page (Introduction) showing through.
What do I need to do to correct this? I hope someone will help. Thank you.

To add widgets to the blank column, you need to go to appearances > widgets, then in the widgets section at the right top click on the pulldown and select “sidebar 2” and then click “show.” You can then add widgets to the blank sidebar as you wish. Make sure and click the “save changes” button at the bottom.
If you want an about section at the top, go to pages > add new and create your about page and make sure the title is “about”. When done, publish the page, and it will appear at the top of the sidebar spanning both columns.
-
That page that spans the two columns is a “special” page: it will only show up in the sidebar if its permalink says “about”. You can go to Pages>Edit, click the “Quick Edit” tab under your Introduction page, change its “slug” to “about”, click Update.
But I think things are better the way you have them now: your intro is rather too long for the sidebar.

Thank you so much – I was tearing my hair out! I’ll play around with it. I think you’re right – it is rather long.
Another related question. I have now changed the slug to ‘About’ for my Introduction. Except now I have two Introductions on the second page. What do I do to correct this? (I’m probably going to keep your advice and keep it the way it was though).
-
At the moment you’ve got “Home”, the original long “Introduction”, and a clever new short “About”. I guess your question translates to how not to have the About show twice when you click on it. Since it’s on permanent display in your sidebar, you don’t need it as a page tab in the header; so edit it to turn it into a child page to the Introduction page: only parent pages show as header tabs.
-
I changed the About to have Introduction as it’s parent. It has now disappeared from all pages. What done wrong?
-
You done no wrong: it’s me did it! Didn’t think well about it: once you turn it into a child page, its permalink changes from “…com/about” to “…com/introduction/about”, so the theme doesn’t recognize it as the “special” page anymore. Sorry I misled you – can’t be done, unfortunately.

Ahhh, so I will just have to live with reading ‘About’ on the right as the side bar as well as on the left when I click onto that page? Just checking! Thank you.
