Appearance>Widgets

Red alert! Please, please, please bring back Classic Editor! I know I speak for a lot of bloggers out there, but we simply don’t understand the Block Editor. WordPress is not fun anymore!

All I was trying to do was change a link on a widget, and two blocks from the footer somehow got moved to the sidebar. How? I freakin’ don’t know. I don’t know!

Plus, it inserted a widget that wasn’t there before. I was able to figure out how to move the widget — Recent Posts — to the footer, but I can’t find a way to delete it. I moved the Copyright Notice back to the footer, but it’s out of order.

The first three columns of the footer are okay.

This is how the fourth column should display:

    Flickr Photos
    Translate
    Poetry Blog
    Copyright Notice
    Follow button

Recent Posts (in the fourth column) needs to be deleted.

Lastly, I still need to change the URL link to the poetry blog.

    Please, and thank you.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    UPDATE:

Okay, I figured out how to move the widgets, but not delete them. The fourth column is now in the correct order. I just need to know how to delete Recent Posts AND the Copyright Notice. I remember that I had deleted them before, and don’t know how they reappeared.

So I deleted Recent Posts — how, I don’t know — but I still need to delete the Copyright Notice, move the Follow button to the bottom of the fourth column, and change the URL link to the poetry blog.

(Blogging should not be stressful. It’s supposed to be a hobby for relaxation.)

Four hours later and I finally figured it out … mostly. I still can’t position the Follow button at the bottom of the fourth column. This has not been fun. It’s plainly obvious that WordPress has designs on a more professional clientele at the expense of simple bloggers who use the free plan. I tried to download the Classic Editor plugin but found out that requires a paid upgrade. In the end, it’s all about the money … isn’t it?

  • It looks like you have the Follow button positioned at the bottom of the fourth column now.

Are you running into any further trouble?

On my computer, the Follow button appears at the bottom of the third column. Yesterday, it was at the bottom of the first column. It is fine for now. I visited WPBeginner on YouTube, and everybody was raving about how the Block Editor makes everything so easy. Really?

In any case, I stopped moving the Follow button because it shifted everything else out of order. It’s so confusing.

Ooops. That is another thing that drives me nuts about WordPress. If I reply here from a different, browser, it displays the Gravatar (glohope) that is open there. So annoying!

  • Glad you were able to sort it out.

For anyone else wondering, you can delete a block widget by clicking it to select it, tapping its three-dot-menu for options, and then choosing to remove it. Much like this:
    https://wordpress.com/support/edit-the-footer/#removing-a-block-from-the-footer

The three dots are usually the last item in the toolbar, which can be just above the block you’ve clicked on, or if you’ve pinned the toolbar to the top of the page (my personal preference) you’ll find the option there. Here’s what it looks like with a top-pinned toolbar. The dots will just be closer if you don’t have it pinned to the top:

Regarding account confusion between browsers: you could fix this by logging into the same account with both browsers, but FWIW, having separate browser profiles for different accounts can be pretty helpful:

I make one for my work account, one for personal stuff, one for managing a family site I take care of, etc. I change the colors for each profile, too, so it’s easier to see which one I’m working in. If that doesn’t work for you, no worries, it’s just a preference, but perhaps it can help.

  • Oh and regarding this:

and change the URL link to the poetry blog

Here’s how to change a site address. Just note the old address gets deactivated, so be mindful when you make the change. Thanks!

@supernovia, I was trying to edit the footer blocks through appearance>customize. Under Visibility, there was no Remove or Delete option, only ‘Show if’. (I posted a screenshot in the Media Library. You’ll see an ice cream shop and the blog title In Pics and Words.)

The widgets that appeared in the sidebar were inactive and I could not delete them, but only move them to the footer. After a few hours, I got the idea to click appearance>widgets, and it was there that I saw the option to remove.

Also, please notice that there is an empty block — Type/ to choose a block — sitting between the Translate widget and Follow button. This may be the reason I can’t seem to position the Follow button under the Translate widget.

This happened once before when I noticed a huge gap between posts on the Home page. One of the staff members discovered an empty block, typed in a few words, and was able to delete it.

The empty block that I see in the footer is visible in both appearance>customize and appearance>widgets. I can’t figure out how to remove it.

Also, I did remember how to change the link URL by clicking on Links in the sidebar.

  • Ahh, visibility is a tool for showing the widget in some cases and hiding it in others. In Customizer with block widgets, look for those same three dots I mentioned. You’ll have an option to remove the widget there.

And yes I’ve confirmed that if you type a few letters, it’ll make the block toolbar appear, which will give you the three dots and allow you to remove the widget. I’ve done that for the footer.

Thank you. I didn’t dare try that myself because I was sure that I would mess it up somehow.
