Apple’s new HLS video options for podcasters

Now that the #1 podcast site, Apple is allowing video alongside of audio for podcasts is there anything in the works for allowing/helping podcasters hosted on WordPress to get their videos over to Apple? They are using HLS and any videos on hosted sites will seamlessly transfer via RSS feeds. I went through a q&a with your AI assistant and learned that WordPress does not support HLS??? can we get this remedied?

    Hey there!

Good news! This is achievable on WordPress today, it just isn’t a feature… yet!

To clarify what’s going on: WordPress doesn’t need to “support HLS” directly; HLS is a video delivery format (.m3u8 playlists + .ts segments). What’s missing is a plugin that handles the pipeline for you: take your video, convert it to HLS, host the segments properly, and inject the right tags into your podcast RSS feed so Apple picks it up seamlessly.

I’d love to help you build out a custom plugin for this exact purpose! It would handle the full workflow: video upload => HLS transcoding => CDN delivery => RSS feed integration, all from within WordPress. The goal is to make it dead simple for podcasters who don’t want to deal with FFmpeg or AWS configs.

Drop a reply and I’ll see how I can help!

  • Hi there!

Although, as you mentioned, HLS is currently not supported on WordPress.com, this is currently being discussed.
