Approvals for readers to access my personal blog
-
Hi! I set my personal blog to ‘private’ because it has personal and family information on it. However, I want to easily be able to approve friends and family that click the link (from facebook or other). Right now I only get an email sent, with the approval link to approve them. 1) Is there a notifications section on the desktop-based or app-based site where I can also (and more easily) see all the requests for approval at once? I can’t find it. 2) Is there a way to more easily check who the person is other than just their handle? If they are required to log into wordpress (& create an account), can I somehow see more information about them? In once case I can’t recognize the handle. Thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, unless things have changed since I wrote this post about Privacy, the email notification is the only indication of someone’s request to access your Private site. To the best of my knowledge, there aren’t any on-site indications in the dashboard and I’m not certain what happens with the app.
AFAIK that email notification doesn’t include any other information about the user asking to access your Private site, even after they’ve created a WPcom account.
I’ve also flagged this thread for Staff for their input if there has been any change to the above and to suggest it if not.
I want to easily be able to approve friends and family
You can side-step this issue by inviting them to view your Private site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#adding-and-removing-viewers-on-a-private-site You can invite up to 10 people in one go and once they’ve accepted the invitation, you can invite more.
Hope that helps too.

Hi there,
The only way anyone can view a private site is if 1) they first set up their own WordPress.com username account, and 2) you add them to your site as a viewer. This second step you can do from My Site ->Manage ->People ->Add
) Is there a notifications section on the desktop-based or app-based site where I can also (and more easily) see all the requests for approval at once? I can’t find it. 2) Is there a way to more easily check who the person is other than just their handle?
The answer to both of these is no. If someone who already has a WordPress.com account manages to come across a link to your site, they can request access, without you having invited them first, and their request is sent to you via email.
That request only contains their WordPress.com username, as that username and an email address is the only information we have about them, and we don’t reveal the email address to you as that would be a violation of our privacy policy. We can’t provide you more information about who that person is, as we don’t have any more information – nowhere when someone creates a WordPress.com account do we even ask them for their real name, and while someone can add that voluntarily in their account profile, we have no way to verify whether or not the details they provide are even real.
So the best way to give people access to your private site is to proactively invite the people you want to have access, rather than waiting for people to discover the link by accident and requesting access.

Hi @kokkieh -thanks for the quick reply and information.
While I understand the reasons why it isn’t possible to reveal a user’s email address, a link to their Gravatar profile or posts on their WordPress.com website in the notification email (provided they added information to their Gravatar profile or have a WPcom website) would be useful. If it hasn’t changed, such information is given in the email notification sent to the site owner when a WPcom user follows a Public site.
Also, does this “approve access to Private site” process behave differently in the WP app? Thanks again.

It might be, though it’s unlikely that an enhancement like that would be considered a priority.

I’m not sure I understand the question. If someone receives a request for access it goes to their email, and if they click the link to approve it they’ll be redirected to their browser. The mobile app does not come into play at any point in the process that I know of.
