Hi there.
I’ve tried to approve a couple of comments on my page but it keeps saying error because I haven’t renewed my paid subscription. I thought comments were part of the free subscription already?
Help anyone?
Thanks
Johnny

Hi Johnny –
Please confirm which site you’re trying to approve these comments on. Yes, comment moderation is built in to WordPress.com for free.

Hi there
Yes I have clicked approve.. Then I get a fail message saying that I haven’t paid for my upgrade!
The site is xploremassagewordpress.wordpress.com
Thank you

Thanks, would you please upload that screenshot to your site’s Media library?
Let us know when that’s done, and we’ll take a look. :)

I’m getting an error message attempting to do that also! Is there an email address I can send the screen grab to?

Hi there,
You are unable to approve comments, because your site is currently locked.
On 9 July 2018 we processed an automatic renewal for the Personal Plan and domain you had on your site at that time. But on 7 August 2018, that payment was disputed by your bank, and the payment was cancelled.
Filing a payment dispute like that against us is not the same thing as requesting a refund, and amounts to accusing us of committing fraud. When you do that, all upgrades are removed from your site, and your site is locked to all changes pending payment of a chargeback fee.
You can see our full policy on this here:
You won’t be able to many any changes like approving comments or uploading media until the chargeback fee is paid:

Well that’s not very helpful and is not the best customer service at all!
The upgrade was paid for as a gift by my friend who didn’t sign up for the renewal.
What a shame.
I guess I shall look elsewhere to create a site.
Take heed anyone planning on upgrading that you may get locked out of your site!

Hi xploremassage,
that you may get locked out of your site!
Upgrades are set to auto renew by default, which is why you were charged. As @kokkieh mentioned, paying the chargeback fee will unlock your site again — this is only needed because the payment was disputed and a chargeback was issued by your bank or card provider (as a fraud prevention measure).
You will be able to use the site again once the chargeback fee has been paid.
-
I shan’t be paying the fee.
Perhaps having an auto renew isn’t the best idea if it leads to disputes that end up being charges your company has to settle, and, in turn, push on to your customers. Just a thought.
-
Is there anything stopping me just creating a new site with exactly the same content and therfore avoiding the charge?
-
If your friend bought you the upgrade, and they disputed the renewal charge, they’re the ones who should be paying this charge, as they’re the ones that entered into an agreement with us and ended up breaking that agreement when they accused us of fraud rather than just asking for a refund.
Nothing prevents you from creating a new site in your account with the same content, though I don’t think you’ll be able to export your content either while the site is still locked.
-
That did not come out quite as I’d intended. What I’m trying to say is, I understand that this might not be your fault as someone else disputed the charge. But that doesn’t change that it was disputed, and that the site cannot be used again until the chargeback fee is paid.
-
It doesn’t seem that you want to resolve this in a customer friendly way.
Had you have informed me I could have changed over the rolling payment to my own card and avoided the additional charge. But instead it seems the focus is on blame!
-
Hi @xploremassage, when your friend accused us of fraud, we were charged a chargeback fee — basically the cost of having to deal with a fraud investigation and what not. That’s the fee you see.
If they cancel the chargeback, and say it wasn’t fraud but just a mistake, the fee goes away, and we can refund them the normal way. So if you, or they, had contacted us back when this happened we’d have more more flexibility in our solutions.
Unfortunately it looks like this happened quite some time ago, so I’m sure the investigation is settled and done by now.

Regarding how we inform you, we would have sent emails to the address listed here:

Again this seems to have happened last year though so, it’s been a while.
