Is there a widget or a changing text box of some kind that I can add under my articles so people don’t have to take the time to register when they first visit?? For example, some web sites have a small box with crazy looking letters/numbers that a person types into a small blank box, which then approves their comment. Is there such a thing at WordPress – even if I need to change themes??

The crazy looking letters/number you are talking about are called captchas. There is not an option to set those up for comments on a WordPress.com blog. However, you can open up comments so users don’t have to register before they leave a comment. To change that, go to the Settings > Discussion page and look for the “Other comment settings.” See this page for details:
