April 30th sidebar weirdness?

On April 30, the sidebars on my WP blog (http://phoenixwoman.wordpress.com) suddenly dumped all my customizations/widgets. I’ve tried adding them back in, but it spreads them across the top when the site is viewed in MSIE and the (MSIE-based) AOL browser; the site looks fine in FireFox. (I’ve currently got only one custom item in my sidebar; it looks hinky in MSIE, but at least the page is readable.)

Did WP do anything funky on 04/30/07? I want to make it so that as many people as possible can read it, even if they are using MSIE. (Yeah, I wish everyone would just switch to FireFox, or that MSIE was coded better, but still…)

what took you so long to post this? =) if you searched the forums, you’d find some threads discussing this bug.

I didn’t think anything of it when it first happened — I just figured that WP was doing some standard WP oddities. I then got distracted doing other things and forgot about it until I found out that my SiteMeter wasn’t metering any more.

Instead of putting SiteMeter in my blogroll, I’d copied the code from my old Blogger page, pasted it into a widget, and put it in my sidebar. It works very nicely — know how WP allegedly won’t let you add the javascript version of Site Meter to your pages? (Which means you won’t be able to track the original URL from which your visitors came before linking to your site. Other things that Site Meter won’t be able to track about your visitors include timezones, keywords, search engines used, screen resolution, screen depth or javascript version.) Well, you CAN do all that if you put the Blogger HTML code for SiteMeter into a WP widget. But if WP suddenly removes all your widgets from the sidebars, then the widget with SiteMeter in it has nothing to meter!

Did you send a Feedback to report what was happening, as was recommended in all the other threads on the widget issue?

(Sigh) As I just told sulz, I just found out about the SiteMeter dropoff recently (as in “today, AFTER the WP support folk went home for the weekend”). I figured that rather than sending out a Feedback that won’t be looked at until Monday at the earliest, I should try my luck with the Forums. But the closest I’ve found to a discussion/”solution” is this: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=10532&page=4&replies=123#post-74691 And the trouble is that it doesn’t solve the problem of the sidebars blowing up in MSIE (but not in FireFox) when the widgets are reinstalled.

That’s right, there IS no workaround. You must contact staff.

Thanks. Guess I’ll just have to wait until Monday, then. No biggie — I’ve got the site so it’s functional, though not pretty. That’ll do for the time being.
