If you upload lots of images into a WordPress.COM site that has no upgrade you can exhaust that free space allocation quickly. Currently, the only way to get an extra space allocation after you upload the images again, is to purchase an upgraded plan. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

WordPress.com Personal includes another 3 GB of extra storage, for a total of 6 GB.
WordPress.com Premium includes another 10 GB of extra storage, for a total of 13 GB.
WordPress.com Business includes unlimited storage space.

Images and media you upload into your media library and embed into posts and pages are on wordpress.COM servers. They remain visible unless or until you delete them from your media library. Deleting them from your media library also removes them from every place you embedded them in the blog and leaves behind broken links.

Staff cannot restore images you delete from your Media Library. You have to upload them all again, and then fix every broken image link in every post/page it was embedded into previously. That is why I do not recommend deleting images to free up space.

  • Hi there,

You cannot “archive” blog posts like you can archive emails. All posts on your site automatically goes into the archive, which is just another way of referring to the main posts feed on your site. The only way to remove a post from that feed is to set it back to draft or to delete it, which means no one will be able to read it any more.

As for media space, it looks like you’ve been uploading incredibly high-resolution images to your site – you have images over 5000 pixels wide while your theme can at most display images at 1400 pixels wide, and most standard non-wide computer screens can only display content up to around 1200 pixels. A 1400 pixel image comes in at about 300kb, while your 5000px images are around 5MB big. That is a lot of wasted space in the media library.

As @timethief indicated above, deleting images from the library will also remove them from your site, so the only option if you don’t want to upgrade will be to go through every post on your site, replace the images with optimised versions, and then deleting the high-res versions afterwards.

You can find some more information on optimising your images for the web here:
