archive and poll have disappeared from right side bar

Today, the blog’s month-to-month archive and the contents of a poll we conducted have disappeared from right side bar. Is this a WordPress glitch?

Hi –
I think the issue here is that the theme you’re using on the blog is very old and hasn’t been updated for sometime now. As browsers and operating systems continue to be updated the theme starts to break as it’s no longer compatible.
I am able to see the blogroll and pages on the right hand side of the widget space. The poll results, and survey, do not load, though.
Go to https://wordpress.com/thems/ and see if any catch your eye. I can answer any other questions that you have about getting moved over to a new theme (it will not affect the content in any way).

Dear Liz Karkowski or other staff members,
Thanks for your reply. It came at a busy time when univ. lectures I give were going online. Sorry for delay. I looked at themes, but they all seem to relate to small businesses and websites. Ours is a literary blog for an international group based in Japan with contributors posting. Our theme, Black Letterhead, is part of our online style (12 years), so if we were forced to move to a new theme to protect easy access to our vast store of archives, which are precious, we want a theme that looks somehow related (i.e. white letters on black background) and will accommodate all the features we have generated there. I hope you can point us to one and also make clear the approx timescale on degeneration (breaking up) of a blogsite (i.e. have we got the rest of this year to decide?) To be honest, as a free site, we have no right to complain to you, but we feel a bit let down that WordPress didn’t explain what was happening until we found things were disappearing. It would surely be a good idea for us to somehow back up our 12 year-old-blog now, so that if the natural process of break-up gets worse, we can somehow preserve what we have accumulated so far (mainly poetry and artwork). A lot of effort by many people over a long period of time has gone into the Icebox blogsite. Your advice, or somebody else’s, kindly requested. Thanks very much for your continuing support. We have always loved WordPress. -
Hi there!
The content of your site will not be affected by the theme, even if it is retired. It may just not work well with the new browsers, as Liz explained above.
As for the themes focusing on businesses – you can customize the theme to your liking, even if the demo page shows a business site, it doesn’t mean you can not build a different type of site with it.
Here, for example, you can see themes built with blog in mind – I think that’s something you are looking for given your current theme:
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/blog/
You can try the older themes without activating them by clicking on the three dots next to the theme’s name and choosing the option Try&Customize.
This will allow you to see how the theme would look like with your content and how could you customize it.
Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.

Thanks. I notice that the complete sidebar loads on certain pages (e.g. Submissions 6 page and Guidelines page), but not on the top page or on certain other pages (e.g. Submissions 5 page and About Us page). Why? I would appreciate someone looking into that anomaly – not complete inability to load, but partial inability. Is that simply ‘breaking up’ of an old theme? I haven’t yet found another theme that will do instead, although I did check a few out. I appreciate the support you are giving.

Since that theme has been retired there’s no way to fix that issue even if we manage to find it.
The WordPress software and other web technologies evolve constantly and that’s why we retire themes.
