How do I add an archive menu on the side bar? I’m also interested in creating category based drop down menus that have links to my older posts in them? I’m in over my head here guys!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello @handmadeandsewforth,
Could you please confirm that the site you need help with is:
http://handmadeandsewforth.wordpress.com/
I just want to make sure I’m looking at the correct site before offering some suggestions.
Thanks!

I’m also interested in changing the avatar that is pictured above. If you have any advice on how to do that?
-
Thanks, @handmadeandsewforth,
I can help with the Archive question, and I’ll also work on the Avatar question.
I just tried out your theme (Buttons 2) on my test site.
You can add an Archive Menu by going to:
My Sites –> Customize
Click on Widgets to take you to the next step.
You should have several options for where you want to add a widget (in this case, the Archive widget). One option that I see is the Sidebar.
Click on +Add Widget, and it should bring up a list of Widgets you can choose from. Archive is one of those options.
Just make sure you save your changes before leaving the page.
(Here’s the documentation if you want more detailed info:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/)For the other part of your other question:
Do you want the category based drop-down menus to be included in the Archive section? Or on your main navigation menu? (Does that make sense?)
-
Thanks – I think I’d like them on the navigation page or at the top where it says about me, contact, home, etc. I’m thinking of making some for clothing, costumes, home decor, etc.
-
See where above in this conversation you have a picture but mine is some weird white and purple design? Can I customize it to make it something I would choose? Thanks!
-
Yes! That’s what I thought you meant :). I just wanted to make sure.
You can change that by going to:
This goes into more detail about what a gravatar is and how to change it:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/You can also link it to your email (different pics for different email accounts if you want). When I did mine I just saved a pic from my phone onto my desktop (I emailed it to myself from my phone) and then uploaded it into gravatar site.
If you need any help with that, just let me know!
Thanks,

I’m actually struggling with this menu issue. I’ve got the archives but instead of my posts going into a category my posts are just going into my headings?
-
So I have a costumes category created but I can’t get it to move to the far right. I also can’t get my posts related to costumes to go into a drop down menu for it?
-
When you click costumes it just brings you to a blank page. I wanted it to have a drop down menu with links to the three posts I already have related to costumes.
-
The menu thing can be a little tricky. I’m still learning how it works, too.
For the blog posts that you’ve written, have you assigned them a category yet?
For example, if you go into a post you’ve already published and click on the Edit option, off to the right side you’ll see “Post Settings.” Under “Categories & Tags” you can assign the post a category.
After that, you’ll go back into Customization and Menus to organize the posts into the right Menu. (Let me just double check the steps you would need to do at that point).
-
I’m hoping this will make sense. If not, please tell me.
After you assign a blog post a category (i.e. Costumes), and save that, you’ll want to go back to your My Sites Menu.
Click on Customization, then Menus, and go into your main Navigation Menu (it will probably say Primary Menu).
You should see your list of main menu items (Costumes, About, Contact).
Under that list, there’s an option to +Add Item. If you click this, it will bring up everything that’s available on your site, like pages, posts, categories, etc.
Under categories, add the Costume category to the Costume section of your main menu. You can drag this to the right, just under the Costume Main Menu tab, to create a sub-menu.
Save this, and then check your site to see if the costume post is showing up under your Costume Menu tab.
I’m confusing you at all, please tell me and I’ll find another way to explain it. This was something that has taken me awhile to learn for my own site, also.

Here’s another question- someone commented on one of my posts and I got an email about it but it doesn’t show up at the bottom of the post? How do I get it to show up? Thanks!
-
Have you checked your settings to see if you allow comments to show up? You can decide if you want to approve (moderate) comments before they appear on your site, or just let comments show up without approval.
To change these settings, go to My Sites, and then Settings (at the very bottom of the list).
There are 4 tabs at the top – General, Writing, Discussion, and Traffic.
The “Discussion” tab will let you change comment settings.

I hope that helps!

That might be the issue – thanks! Ok one more question – you probably get this a lot – but is there anyway to make money off of a free wordpress site? I’m at a loss reading all these posts on ad sense and word ads and I don’t know if there’s anything I can do to try to profit from all of this…
-
Hi! That’s a great question. I have to step away for a bit, but I’ll be back later this afternoon. In the meantime I’ll see what I can find out about that.
Your avatar and your site look awesome, by the way!
Nice chatting with you!
