Archive Menu on side bar?
-
Thank you both for all of your help. So I’ve read through the links about monetizing your site and I have become an Amazon Associate and have the hang of the affiliate links. But I can’t seem to figure out whether having a free basic wordpress site allows me to run ads like word ads?

Also, one day ago I got this email but it is not showing up on my site. I have my discussion settings so that nothing has to be manually approved so I’m not sure why I can’t get comments?

First I’m looking at some reasons why the comments may not be showing up. Have you checked under My Sites – Comments section to see if any comments are pending?
If you’ve already checked that, I’ll look for some other ways to troubleshoot this and see what might be preventing that from showing up.
I’ll look for info about the word ads on a free site, too. That’s something I’d like to know more about as well.
Thanks!

Yes – I did and there is nothing there pending but I’ve gotten two emails saying comments were left so I don’t get it either. Thanks about the word ads too. I’ve read several articles but I’m still confused. I’m not sure if I need a different domain to be able to do it. I know there is a site visitor minimum requirement.

Here’s one more setting to check, which I’m guessing you’ve already enabled this. But…sometimes the simple answer is the best one, right?

Of course! I commented on this page:
Cold Shoulder Trapeze Dress – Simplicity Pattern 8383 Review
And I left it under “Leave a Reply” – I didn’t fill out the comment form.
I can see the comment on your site – are you able to see it?

I just filled out the comment form on that same page, and sent a “testing to see if this is working” comment.
-
Great! I’m so happy that it worked.
I’ll start looking for information about the word ads :).

While I was looking for information about the comments, I found some older threads that talk about comments being marked as spam by the blog spam filters. This article talks about that. But, I’m also going to tag this for a member of Staff to look at it and see if they can help you figure out why some comments are being blocked.
For making money on the site, this is what I’ve found:
WordAds is the option for WordPress.com sites to use, but there are some requirements.
1) Premium or Business users have automatic access to WordAds
2) Free sites can qualify, but have to meet the minumum traffic requirements (which seems to be at least 1000+ visitors per month)I found that information on this FAQ page. Is that what you had already found in your research?
-
Yes – well this is what I read –
Who is eligible for WordAds?Users upgrading to the WordPress.com Premium or Business plans have automatic access to the WordAds program and can set up advertising on their sites immediately.
WordPress.com bloggers, who are using a Free or Personal Plan, have moderate to high traffic and appropriate content also have the option to apply to the WordAds program.
Only sites with a custom or mapped domain can apply. The last sentence is what confused me because I don’t know if the free plan gives you a “custom or mapped domain” ?
-
The free plan doesn’t give you a custom domain, but all of the paid plans do. The Personal plan is $4/month (billed yearly) and it includes a free domain. The prices for the plans are outlined here.
I believe that has changed recently. You used to custom map a domain on a free plan, but now a paid plan is required to do that – so any of the 4 paid options would work.
-
It’s hard to start paying for a plan when i don’t know if I will get enough traffic to even qualify for word ads. . .
-
@handmadeandsewforth, if you don’t have enough organic, quality traffic, you wouldn’t be making much money even if you could qualify for an ad program.
I recommend writing, getting good at blogging, and connecting with your audience. Then when you’ve got enough traffic you can look at getting a plan and WordAds.

Thank you for the advice – everything I read says the same thing quality brings visitors. I’m just not sure how to get visitors. When I google my site I can’t even find it. Any suggestions there?

Yup, those resources I just shared will be very helpful. I especially like the ones on learn.wordpress.com and dailypost.wordpress.com .
