Archives

Hello. I’m new to WordPress and a novice. I have selected Piano Black by Mono-Lab because I like the look. In the upper right hand corner, there is an “Archives” heading, and below that shows “June 2012” because that’s when I started trying to put this together. However, my blogs date from many years ago, and I’m wondering if there’s a way to change “Archives’ from the date I’m entering the information, to the date of the blog (e.g., June 2008 instead of June 2012)? Thank you for your help. http://edscapades.wordpress.com/

That is the archives widget. As you continue to post, and as months and years go by, there will be additional entries added to that July 2012, August 2012, etc. If you had posts that were older than June of 2012, then there would be additional entries before that time.

If you do not want the archives widget (it is a good navigation aid for visitors though) you can go to appearance > widgets and remove it from the sidebar. If there are no widgets showing in the sidebar (you haven’t physically added any of your own) then just drag whatever widgets you want into the sidebar and that default display of widgets will go away.

Hi. Thanks for the information. I’m still a bit lost.

I was able to remove the Archive and June 2012, and now I have just the word Archives. My ultimate goal is to have a chronological list of my travel blogs from earliest (at the bottom of the list) to the most recent (at the top of the list). In other words, if I add five years worth of blogs today , I don’t want the date to appear as July 2012: I want the dates of all the blogs from those five years to appear as a list with links to the individual blogs. Is that possible?

    Thanks. Ed

Oh, ok, the “archives” thing in the sidebar is actually a menu, not a widget, and the only way to get rid of it would be with CSS, which takes the custom design upgrade.

If you add 5 years of posts to the sidebar, as individual items, the list is going to be so long as to be nearly useless. The reason archives are designed to show by month is so that it breaks them down into smaller more manageable chunks. With the short – and getting shorter – attention span of the 140 character twittering webizens, they don’t do too well with very long lists of things.

My suggestion for something like that (for those adventurous few that have not yet been assimilated by the Borg, would be to create a page and use the archives shortcode to create an ascending list. I would also either keep an archives widget, or if you are categorizing your posts, a categories widget. It might be useful, especially for a travel blog, to categorize your posts to organize them into groups based on location.

If you do not want to buy the custom design upgrade, the only way to get rid of the archive in the sidebar is switch themes.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. I changed themes and with a bit of trial and error I’ve gotten the site to look and operate the way I want it to. Thanks.
