Archives – 2 questions

Hi.
I made an Archives page. It shows the Month/year, and how many posts.
If you click on that month, it it takes you to a page that shows all the posts from that month with preview/excerpts.
My understanding is the default limit for excerpts is 55 words.
1) a) Is there a way to format the main Archives page so that if someone clicks on the month, they can see the list of posts with just titles w/links under it?
b) Or just have a list of the post titles w/links always showing under the month?
Either way.If not, then:
2) After you click on the month and are taken to that page (ie: February 2023) and it shows the posts with excerpts, can the number of words shown in the excerpt be reduced?Thank you very much. Have a great day.

Hey there! Good questions.
The archive block doesn’t have that setting, but I can think of a few options:
- Your hand-crafted Archives page could just show a list of titles. I have a friend who does that; it looks nice.
- You could change how your auto-generated archive pages (like this one) display the posts by changing your query loop block. You can make those a list, you could get rid of excerpts altogether, … lots of options there.
- Did you know you can hand-craft excerpts for each post if you’d like? Sometimes I’ll do that, especially if the first few lines of my post aren’t super relevant to the meat of it. Controlling the length can make your grids look neater, too.
So in short, while I don’t have a way to auto-generate drop downs right now without getting super hacky, let us know which of those options sounds nice to you and we can help point you to the right guides.
