my new theme has an archives function, but don’t want all my posts to show on one page, if that makes sense, only my most recent posts.

To change the number of posts shown in your front page (as well as archives pages), you go to Settings>Reading.

To display a list of your most recent posts, you go to Appearance>Widgets and add the Recent Posts widget. (But you need another theme for that: the one you’re using isn’t widget aware.)

that was brilliantly easy. thank you.

Hello, can you tell me how to change the number of “recent posts” and add more archives? Blog: http://busdriver.wordpress.com/

    1. Appearance > Widgets > Recent Posts Widget > click Edit > set number > click Save Changes.

    2. What do you mean by “adding more archives”?

  • Unknown's avatar

The archives widget will separate your posts into year/month. As you add more posts, and as the year goes on, the number of links shown in the archive widget will grow.

Just switched from blogger to wordpress. I noticed that my archives do not include pictures. Any idea what went wrong and how to rememdy?

The archives pages in some themes show images, and in some themes they do not. In some themes they only show an excerpt of the text, in some themes they show the entire post, and in others they only show the title of the post. This also applies to tags and category views as well.

It’s all up to the author of the theme as to which way they want to show things.

Your blog is showing a summary of each article, which is the given method. You can write your own excepts under the post editor. (if your theme has that feature—don’t know if they all do?)

I started to use excerpts for what shows up on archive pages and can put pictures into them. I don’t think there is an automatic way to do that, though. I’ve just been going back and editing them in by hand.

It looks like PressRow will show pictures in excerpts. But, as I said, you have to custom write the except for each post or else the basic summary will show up. To get pictures into the excepts, insert the html for the pic into the excerpt box while the editor is in html mode (not visual).

I don’t know if anything you imported from blogger will do that automatically.

Thanks for the replies. I was just coming to the conclusion that the no image thing was intentional. Sounds like inserting html for each image for 20 months work of blogging would be time consuming. I’ll have to give that some consideration. Thanks again.

I just looked at your earliest posts and see that many of them are duplicates: 3 for 28 May 2007, 3 for 19 May 2007…

The process IS time-consuming, but mechanical to add the pictures if you open 2 browser windows and drag and drop. Writing the excepts is a little less mechanical, but not difficult.
