I am using the theme twenty twelve. I want to put an archive on my home page, how would I go about this? Every tutorial I have come across says to use archives template archives.php found in my theme directory, but I haven’t been able to find my theme’s directory. I am technologically un-savy so please break the steps down in detail. My website is called amberbcoleman.com.

You make a static Page and put the Archives shortcode on it http://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/
Also, when looking for instructions, look in the Support documents here, so you aren’t confused by non-applicable instructions.

Please become aware that there are different flavors of WordPress. Most of what you find online via searches are not referring to wp.com!!!! Advice for wp.ORG will not work here with our free-hosted sites.

There are some themes which do offer an archives template, but another volunteer will have to tell you which ones.
You can use an archives shortcode on a page which can be a navigational link on a custom menu to display a list of your posts:
