Archives/Posts all gone, except this month July 2015

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. We are encountering a problem with our wordpress. For a unknown reason on the last 2 posts are on the website. All other posts from the last years are gone. Also, the trash folder has 0 entries.

Could this be a problem related to a wordpress bug?

Does wordpress offer to restore a site? (backups). We have no backup of ourselves.

Hope this is a wordpress.com glitch, and all will come back, but i fear the worst :(

Thank you very much for any help,

    regards, Erik

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

After looking at the Google cache of your above site, that is indeed disconcerting. I’ve tagged this for Staff assistance/input.

The first thing to look at is who has access to your site on an Editor or Admin level user role? Are you the only Admin on the site? If so, do you routinely log out of the site so that no one else has access while you are away from the computer?

    Hi Erik,

Our records indicate that over the past few weeks, you trashed and then permanently deleted most of the posts that were on your website. (Those actions were taken directly from your account.) As long as posts are in the trash you can recover them from there for a time, but once they are permanently deleted they are gone.

Does anyone else have access to your WordPress.com login details or, as justjennifer mentioned, access to your computer while you’re logged in to your WordPress.com account?

I woiuldn’t know HOW to delete my posts. I certainly woiuldn’t have done so or tried even, and anyway why was the trash also emptied? Obviously it wasn’t me–I’d haave shot myself before doing that. this blog is my LIFE. Novbody has accerss to my computer or even speaks English here. (I am in Guatemala).

True, I haven’t signed out, as it was more convenient that way. But each time I did something I had to enter the proper code to get access. Isn’t that pproof of having been signed out?

Staff have records of who did what under which username and login information and when they did it.

Only one Admin per site is the recommendation.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator

Apparently, someone does have your login information.

    re: hacked accounts and blogs

If anyone is posting anything to your blog or removing anything from it, or changing anything in it, or if your blog has been deleted and you did not delete it, then it’s most likely that you have provided them with the ability to do so, either deliberately by adding them as official users, or by allowing them access to your login information, or by posting content that makes it easy for them to guess what your log-in information is.

For you the question that needs to be answered is: Who, aside from me, has access to my login information?

Go to your email program immediately and change the password to a very difficult one because that’s how many hackers gain access to blogs.

    Read > http://en.support.wordpress.com/security/

    1. If you can log-in go here > Users > All Users and delete any user that does not belong there.

    2. Disable post by email > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/

    3. Disable post by voice > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-voice/

    4. Change your blog password to a very difficult one > http://en.support.wordpress.com/passwords/#change-your-password
You can also reset your password via your Settings tab on the WordPress.com home page:
    http://wordpress.com/#!/settings/

    5. Use a secure, encrypted connection to connect to your Dashboard. Under Users → Personal Settings, check the box that says “Always use HTTPS when visiting administration pages, and click Save Changes.

    6. Use two step authentication http://en.support.wordpress.com/security/two-step-authentication/

    7. Run a security scan on your computer.

    8. Never leave your computer logged into your blogs and walk away from it. Always log out properly.

but there is no one here who could have done anything with my computer. I live alone, and secluded.

So, you have no records at your end then?

Or is there any way to reconstruct it from my microsoft word back up records of most of the posts?

I mean coiuld they be retroactively inserted with the previous dates?

So, you have no records at your end then?

Staff does have records and have already stated that your account was used to delete the items. Read what Staff said here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/archivesposts-all-gone-except-this-month-july-2015?replies=6#post-2432098agi please. Then act what I posted above because, without doubt, someone has gained access to your login information.

@happinesspoetry Given what @rachelmrc has said, there’s little question here that someone had access to your account and deleted those posts even if it wasn’t you personally. As @timethief suggests, you will want to change your site password and consider using 2-step authentication.

As far as reconstructing your missing posts, if you didn’t keep a backup/export of your site, I’m afraid that the only way I can think to reconstruct those posts is to find them via a Google cached version of the post and then copy/paste the content of the cached version into a new post and backdate it in the publish module of the Post Editor.

Truly sorry for no better news.
