archiving and deleting

can i both archive a post and remove it from the posts original page? – i like the Archive widget that will allow people to go back and see older posts, but i don’t want those posts to also remain on the home page (where i originally posted them.) Everything seems to indicate it’s an either-or: either i have the post in both places, or i delete it all together. Any ideas on how i can truly archive (as in – move to an archive file) posts?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Your home page by default displays your blog’s main feed, that is, ALL your posts ever published in reverse chronological order. That’s how blogs work. The Archives widget simply contains links to the already published posts on the main feed. Remove the post from the main feed (by deleting it) and there’s nothing for the Archives widget to link to.

Note that we can’t “archive” a post in the way that you can archive an email. The moment a post gets published it automatically goes into the blog archive, which is simply a collection of all posts ever published. It is not a separate file or folder where you can send old posts.

Now, if you want a static page to appear on your home page instead of the main feed, that can be done. But that will either mean your latest posts won’t appear anywhere (in which case the Archives Widget will be the only way to reach your posts) or you’ll also need to create a page that will still display the main feed, i.e. all posts in reverse order.

Instructions to set up a static front page, if you want to do that, are here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
