Archiving Old Posts and Photos
-
I have a classroom website that I am cleaning up for this school year. I’d like last year’s photos and posts to stay on the website, but not on the main pages (the main blog page and the “Photos” tab). Is there a way to kind of file them away under those tabs with headings “2011-12 Posts” and “2011-12 Photos” so that they are still accessible, but not the main focus of the pages? Thanks for the help!

I am just a fellow member and not a volunteer helper, but I had this thought about managing the photos. You could use custom menus and make a menu item called photos and then rename your current photo page to 2011-12 or some such and make it a submenu of the photo menu item. Your current photos could either go on the photos menu page or have its own submenu with the current year. See the Custom Menus Support document here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
I think your main posts feed will have to remain as is but such is the nature of blog posts, I would just make sure that my first post of the school year captures attention so that if anyone is reading back, they will realize when the transition between school years happens. As you make more posts in the new year, the older ones will be further and further down the page and have less significance. Another idea is to set school year categories to your posts. Then you can feature your categories on your custom menu, thereby having a category for the current year and a separate one for the previous year.
There is also an archives widget arranged by month. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/
This is not a complete or elegant solution, but just thoughts from a fellow blogger.

@whatsuproom125 Just found where it tells how to do bulk updates if you want to add the year category to your existing posts. It’s in this support article. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/
You move fast! I like your photo submenus. Hope you have a great school year.
