Are free giveaways banned on wordpress.com

I’m a bit confused regarding the rules of third party sponsorship. I want to host a giveaway and found someone who is willing to donate a product for me to giveaway. In return I would write about my experience with their product and provide a link for my readers to click if they were interested.

If my sponsor and I aren’t earning any money from the giveaway, is it OK to post a link to their website on my wordpress.com site?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m relatively sure that payment in kind (ie stuff) is not allowed, but you should contact staff for clarification. Use your dashboard Help button.
Your sponsor IS earning something; the social capital. Otherwise, why would they give anything away? That’s the tricky bit. Also, depending where you live (ie in the US) you may have to pay taxes on that.

shes not paying me to review her product. The product is for me to review and give away, I don’t get to keep it. Does that make a difference. The link is to her Etsy store.

one more thing, are giveaways prohibited even if there isn’t linking involved? Just a simple giveaway from me to my followers.

She is paying you in product; you’re paying her in social capital. That’s what the giveaway is about.
I was offered a giveaway like this and put it on my external blog, not here, because i didn’t want to be suspended.

Your “opinion” didn’t really answer my question about having a simple giveaway that doesn’t include sponsorship. It’s okay i’ll make sure to “ASK STAFF”

Giveaways ARE sponsorship. You know this. That is why you referred to the person as a “sponsor.”

sorry, let me clarify what I meant by my second question.
Since sponsorship is not allowed, can I personally give away say a $50 gift card to amazon.ca. In this case amazon wouldn’t be sponsoring me, I would be purchasing the gift card myself . No one else included.
If I’m repeating myself I apologize, I’m trying to avoid breaking the rules.

My experience here is that this would probably be okay, but again, staff are the ones that make these kinds of calls. I don’t know offhand of any WP.com blogs that have done giveaways except those owned by artists and designers who give away their own product.
