Are ISPs blocking WordPress pages AGAIN?

  • Unknown's avatar

They might be ok people but they’re completely incompetent and I’ve lost money because of this. My wordpress site is part of my livelihood. What would be ok is compensating people for inconvenience!

  • Unknown's avatar

That is a very good point. I have lost hits (and therefore it is likely that I have also lost money) because of this – and I’m sure that Rose and I are not unique cases!
Perhaps if there was a financial burden attached to this organisation’s actions, it would be less keen to affect so many people.

Yes my hits have halved, it’s a nightmare!
I’ve rang Talk Talk (my provider) and the IWF and neither have any clue about this issue. One thing I do know is that my blog works from my friends computer and he’s with Virgin. But I can’t be hanging around at my friend’s taking up his time and computer half the day!

This has got to be sorted out!

Thanks for the update David and am interested PO is affected too as was going to move from Talktalk. As others say, this annoying issue ought to have been eradicated by now.

When this first happened last July I asked WP to deal with IWF and ISPs at CEO level because not only that’s where the clout comes from but it’s also, and has proven to be, a major industrial issue. But what would I know? I worked as management liaison for IT service desk between major gov’t dept’s users and service providers.

Thanks for info Rjaybee. So you reckon this is definitely an issue with IWF and ISPs? I did phone IWF and Talk Talk, but obviously just the usual customer service level, so they weren’t aware of this.

Is there a WP advisor here who can update us on what steps are being taken just now? And if there’s any progress as to the cause of the problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

There is something that is confusing me, and I hope somebody reading this might be able to explain. I can blog unhindered on my wife’s iMac, right across the desk, and cannot blog on my Microsoft laptop. Does this tie in with the idea that the problem has got anything to do with my ISP?

  • Unknown's avatar

I can only reiterate what’s already been said – this is a recurring issue that only seems to affect WordPress, so surely it is up to WordPress to find a lasting solution? Or can’t you be bothered because you are a US company and this problem mainly seems to affect the UK?
This is the third time this has happened and it’s getting really old. And no, I am not with Talk Talk, thank God.

I’m going to try signing in as a new user. Will let you know how I get on..

  • Unknown's avatar

I have created our own post for this issue but would like to say your not alone this is happening to us too at https://lifecommunitygroup.wordpress.com
If anyone comes back with a resolution please let us know asap xx

Also would like to note that although we are on talk talk we have had organizations from other groups on other providers try to get on to obtain our fundraising and training and have been unable to. WordPress we would like an email and explanation please. Otherwise can anyone recommend a site similar to wordpress that is working on all providers so we can move before this really does do our organization a damage to public confidence

Absolutely agree Londoninitiative, we’re very much left dangling here and do require updates. I am also thinking of moving to another site, though the amount of info and images on my wordpress site would make that a massive inconvenience, not to mention people being confused when they can’t find my site at the usual place, thus losing yet more visitors

  • Unknown's avatar

Signed in as new user (from my pc in general) no luck!

Interesting – have worked satisfactorily all day without any hitch AND posted new item day on Chrome via Talktalk, but when I try IE11 even the homepage to my blog fails with ‘Page cannot be displayed’. This is after having cleared IE cache but didn’t do so for Chrome.

Let me once again reassure everyone that while this is not an issue of our making, we take this issue very seriously. As soon as this issue comes to our attention, we reach out to the IWF to try to resolve it.

It sounds like have things been resolved with the IWF (for this round, at least), so it’s now up to the ISPs to update their lists and restore access, which should happen soon.

Many thanks for all your efforts Jackie

Thanks for update Jackiedana It’s most frustrating that this happens. I wonder if there’s anything the WP community can do to pressure the IWF? A shared letter everyone can sign or something?

It’s incredibly inconvenient, sorry to go on but I’ve lost visitors, therefore earnings, also having to take extra time out to go to a friend’s house where the blog does actually work

Hope it’s all sorted soon as you say

  • Unknown's avatar

@rosestrang I understand and share your frustration.

This article explains the issue as well as anything I’ve seen:

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks Jackiedana, I’ll share that around, it does reveal a complete lack of regard for user’s rights

  • Unknown's avatar

Cheers Jackiedana – connection is still intermittent here, with no reason apparent when a page can’t be downloaded.

  • Unknown's avatar

I expect it will take some time for the update to filter down to the ISPs and then to the users. If things aren’t working within the next day or so, you might check with your ISP and ask if they have updated their IWF proxy information.

jackiedana, once normal service is resumed, could WordPress please make it clear to people who have been affected by this ‘time out’ what steps are being taken to ensure that we don’t have a repeat two to three months down the line.
