Are ISPs blocking WordPress pages AGAIN?
-
jackiedana, I’ve looked at the link above, and it’s old news, dating back to December last year. This is the same one that was drawn to our attention when there was a similar loss of connection in March. This article appears less than sure of its facts. Please, more definitive answers this time.
-
The article may be a few months old now, but it’s the same exact issue. The only thing that’s changed this time is that we believe that the main cause of the issue lies with the IWF rather than the ISPs directly, which is information we did not have in the past.

@jackiedana
I do apologize, in advance, if this is out of line. Couldn’t these bloggers try using a workaround? I’m thinking of using VPN or proxy to access WordPress.com blogs

Or maybe even using Opera Turbo http://www.opera.com/browser/turbo/ -
Timethief, thanks. If anyone using one of the affected ISPs would like to try them and report back, I’d be interested to hear how they work.

@jackiedana
I’d be interested to hear any workaround results too, so I’m subscribing to this thread. -
jackiedana I appreciate the work you’re doing on this. I’ve got a question for you. I’ve been unable to blog from my laptop these few days, and can blog on my wife’s iMac across the desk, same ISP. How does this fact fit with the explanation that ISP providers are blocking access?
-
it’s fine with a proxy … my computer currently thinks it’s in Italy. But that’s not a fix for all WP’s customers.

I’ve been having the same issue AGAIN.
I get all the info that WordPress have given us, and how quickly they act when it happens is great but at no point have they said what they are doing to work the ISPs to stop this ever happening to us again.
People are losing hits and money here and it doesn’t seem like 6 months on, a permanent solution has been found. Crazy.

Still experiencing problems (on Talktalk). Keep getting the following error message:
The connection was reset“The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.”Have cleared cache and cookies to no effect

Assuming all is well on the IWF’s front, it may take some time for the ISPs to update their records. Hopefully they resolve it soon for you.
As for the question about why it works on one computer and not another, I’m not sure I can answer that . It’s possible one computer may have a proxy set up, or may have a different connection to the ISP. I’ve also heard that there are settings with some ISPs that affect how the blocking works for each user, so that may be worth asking your ISP about.
-
I’m still experiencing problems too – and worse than that, from what I’m seeing, it seems you’re unable to assure us in any way that this problem won’t happen again. Is that right?

When Staff have something to report they will report it here. In the meanwhile you may want to try using VPN or proxy to access WordPress.com blogs

British users are reporting an inability to leave comments on my blog. Would that be related to this same issue? I assume so, but they’re puzzled. All are Chrome users, but I’m not sure yet about the ISP.
-
As much as we would sincerely like to do so, we cannot provide an estimate for when service will be restored, nor can we offer a reassurance that this will not happen again, because the blocking is being done by third-parties who are completely beyond our control. If you want to take action, I’d encourage you to talk to your ISPs and tell them you want them to reconsider “safe filtering” of the internet, particularly if the systems block legitimate sites such as WordPress.com.

Why has this not been covered by BBC News surely the widespread cover of the situation would warrant a news story to give them all a kick up the bottom?
-
jackiedana, nobody has yet said anything on this thread that convinces me that this loss of connection is due to advice from the Internet Watch Foundation and blocking by ISPs.
I’d like somebody at WordPress to convince me that talktalk and the IWF are not being wheeled forward as convenient scapegoats.
Let’s see the evidence, please.

Not all of us are that computer savvy – this sounds like gobbledegook to me. Proxy?? VPN?? At best it sounds like a temporary solution, and it’s not very satisfactory if people’s computers think they’re in Italy. This problem needs a cure, not a plaster putting on.
