Are photo “captions” available for free WP users?

I found the “Getting a caption to post w/ image” forum but can’t find any of the tags they are referring to. Is this only available for paid upgrade users? Is there a way to have “captions” for free users?

I’ve found two ways to get a caption with my photo… one is to use a photo software like PhotoShop. You create a New File with a canvass just a little longer than the photo, then copy and paste the photo into the New File. The little hanging bit at the bottom becomes the place where you put the caption, then just save as. With this method you can align the photo anywhere in your text and the caption will always be exactly under the photo.

The other is really only good if the photo is at the top or bottom of your post. Basically, after placing the photo in your post, put your cursor beside the photo and press Shift:Return… it’s called a “Soft Return” and it will keep the text close to the photo. This is kind of the one I use most often.

I noticed a few smaller images on your most recent post, for these you might want to use alt text, or ‘a title=”image explanation here”‘… so when a cursor is placed over the image a line of text pops up. If you don’t want to mess with the HTML all you have to do is (in the visual editor) click on the photo, then press the Link button and fill in the “Title” box.

I hope some of this makes sense…

Wow thanks Feartheseeds. Incredibly helpful. So helpful that I have one more question for you. I used such small photos because the design of my blog is not fixed so the margins will expand to fit the screen of the user. If stretched too far, some of the bullet points become aligned with the photo and some stay below the photo. Looks terrible. Is there a way to make sure the bulleted list always stays below the inserted photo and not screw up my intended formatting?

    Thanks

I use the same theme for my photo blog… something I do is use the soft return when leaving text in point-form beneath a large photo. Align the photo to the left, then put soft returns after each bullet-line of text so any text directly under the photo will align left as well. Aligning to the centre can look okay design-wise as well. No matter how far your theme is “stretched” the text will stay under the photo because everything between ‘p align=”left”‘ and ‘/p’ becomes the same element.

Trying to attach text to small photos is a pain, just because after putting in the bullet-points under the photo you’ll have tonnes of white space between the edges of the photo and the margins… but with horizontal photos of 300px, 350px, 500px and maybe even 700px wide wide it can be done nicely (the theme you’re using is great for large horizontal photos). You may want to warn viewers that your blog is meant to be read at a certain screen size… like “best viewed with screen set at 1152px by 864px”.

    Hope this helps…
