Are Portfolio Pages Limited to Certain Themes?

  • Unknown's avatar

I may be confusing two things.

Can a portfolio layout be created in any theme using the new block editor?

Is the sub-type of page/post known as “portfolio” limited to certain themes?

    And what is the difference?

I’m asking because I am not sure which theme to choose for a new site at this point and I want to make sure I choose for the right reasons.

    Thanks

  • Hi there,

The WordPress.com Portfolio feature is something you can add to any site. To do this you will need to turn on the “Portfolio Content Type” for your site, as directed here: https://wordpress.com/support/portfolios/

When you activate Portfolios on your site, the /portfolio URL is reserved by the content type, and it automatically displays all items in your portfolio on this page. So that URL can’t be used for another page, the portfolio content type will take it over.

You also have the option to set up a custom portfolio page for your site. We do not have a “block” for this, but we have something called a “shortcode” and you would add the portfolio shortcode into the “shortcode block”

The portfolio has quite a few options to change the display settings, and you can learn more about that here: https://wordpress.com/support/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/

In addition some of our themes (such as your current theme, Blask) are set up to work with the portfolio content type automatically, so you don’t need to use the shortcode method to set up a portfolio page. The theme has built in styles and ways to display your work without the need for shortcodes:

We also have a guide here for making the most of your portfolio which I think will help:https://wordpress.com/support/portfolios/making-the-most-of-your-portfolio/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
