Are Screen Shots fair use or copyright infringements?
-
I’ve searched the forum but could not find the answer, so here goes.
I’ve also researched online but couldn’t find a solid answer.
Is it considered “fair use” to take a screen shot of a web page/article/picture and post it in a blog post? In this case, it is a blog post that I am interested in taking a shot of.
My purpose is the capture a few sentences and part of a graphic. I was intending to link back to the page, which might draw fire from the owner/author because I am writing a critical review of the the post.
Thoughts?

If you are taking a screenshot of a copyrighted image, or a copyrighted site, then you would be in violation of copyright laws. What method you use to display copyrighted material has nothing to do with it, if you display something that you are not the copyright holder of, then you can get yourself in trouble.

If all you want is a few sentences and you link back, then that will likely fall under fair use. It is always best to ask first though and/or look for a copyright statement and terms of use on the site and read through those. Some sites are lenient and some are seriously strict.

I’ll probably err on the side of caution and just quote a few sentences, but it’s a bummer because the graphic incites strong emotions, and words just don’t do it justice.
