Are the Demo versions of each theme Standard or Premium Version?
-
I use Oxygen, recently started, but can’t get my featured image to be as large as the featured image in the demo version. Also can’t figure a way to put caption in each image, and to set up scrolling images.
Thanks much,

Hi Rick,
To enable those features you will need to use the Showcase Page template. I see that you have already created a “home” page, so that is a good place to start. Just edit it, and select the Showcase template as shown here:
Next, you will need to make this your front page, and move your posts to their own “blog” page. You can learn more about how to set up a static homepage here: http://learn.wordpress.com/bonus-round-get-a-home-page/
Once you have done that, to populate the slider, you will need to create a series of sticky posts; these will become the “slides” in your homepage slider. Be sure to set a Featured Image that is at least 750 pixels wide for each one. This will become the slide you see on the homepage, and the text you see in each slide is the title of post you made.
You can read more about how to set up the Oxygen theme here: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/oxygen/

Jerry,
Thanks so much for that clear, detailed description. Went thru and did all of it, and got what I’m looking for. Pics from my two previous posts aren’t sliding thru, but I think they must be smaller than 750px.
Thanks again,
Rick -
Jerry,
I checked the pixel count on my two images. They are 5168 × 3194 and 1024 x 685. I set them both as “sticky.” When I did that, the disappeared from the home page (images were not their as sliders, and the post was not visible below the top slider image), but were still visible on blog page. After deleting and reinserting the 5168 × 3194px image (of the counter at 365), that image & post is now behaving properly on the home page. However, the other image (of the feet on the scale) still doesn’t cooperate.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Rick -
When dealing with featured images that have a specific “job” to do, like populating a slider or other theme feature, I think it is a good idea to pre-crop your images before uploading.
This can sometimes mean uploading more than one version of an image (one for the post, and one just for the featured image, for example) but it always gives the most predictable results. With that in mind, you may want to try cropping them to be exactly 750 x 380 px and then uploading them to the site.
That way you can control precisely what goes into the crop, and get a more predictable result on the site.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Can you copy the URL of the post you are having problems with? Happy to take a closer look.
Thanks!

Thank you. Same problem with all of these.

Hi there,
I’m a little confused. Are you trying to make those blog posts above appear in the homepage slider here?
Thanks!
-
Hi,
Yes, exactly. I want all of the posts to appear in the homepage slider. So I set all of them as “public, sticky,” and made sure they were each at least 750p.As you can see, I have two posts in the slider now. As far as I can tell, I set up those two (“Home for Christmas…” & “Resolved”) the same way as the three others above (“Happy Karen New Year,” “Not Another Diet,” & ” More Than Minecraft”). For some reason, the two work right on the slider, but these other three do not.
I also tried cropping one of the pictures that wasn’t working down to ~750x383p, but it still didn’t work.
Thanks for all your help

Gotcha, thanks for explaining.
In looking at your posts more closely, it appears that the Sticky setting did not “stick” in this case… sorry, I could not resist that pun. :)
Good news is that this is an easy fix. Just edit the post in question, and click on the “Edit” link next to Visibility: Public
As shown here, this will expand to show you options for changing your post’s visibility settings: https://cloudup.com/cEhrmefZ944
Just make sure that you have a check box next to the Sticky option for all of these posts, and when you are done, scroll down and make sure to set a featured image, as this will become the “slide” in the slider. Don’t forget to hit the blue “Update” button when you are done to save these changes.
Do this to all three posts, and it should work as promised, but if not let me know and I will take a closer look. :)

Yes, please take a closer look! The problem is that the sticky setting is working for 2 of my posts but not for the others (now 6).
When I set them as sticky, they disappeared from the home page (images were not there as sliders, and the posts were no longer visible below the top slider image), but they were still visible on blog page.
Since setting those posts as sticky was not getting them into the slider, and since it was hiding them on the home page, I took off the sticky setting. So I knew that they could not be in the slider, but at least they would be visible on the home page.
If you are still there, I have now set all 6 posts as sticky. Again, only the two are in the slider. They other 4 are not in the slider and are not visible on the home page.

Ok, I understand.
When I set them as sticky, they disappeared from the home page (images were not there as sliders, and the posts were no longer visible below the top slider image), but they were still visible on blog page.
It is a good idea to think of the sticky setting as being separate from the featured image setting; in this case the featured image does not control wether a post will appear in the showcase slider or not. This setting is controlled by wether a post is a sticky or not.
If you set a post as a sticky, it “hides” it from the standard blog feed (to avoid duplication) as it is assumed that this post will be displayed in the slider. So to make those posts appear in the “recent articles” feed below the slider, you must make sure they are NOT set to be stickies.
Regarding featured images, it is a good idea to add one for all blog posts when using this theme, wether they are meant to be in the slider or not. For posts that are set as “sticky” they will not be included in the slider if one is not present, so for those, a featured image is required.
Edit: Another way to think of this is that a post that is a sticky but does not have a featured image is in “limbo” in that it is hidden from the recent posts feed section, but does not meet the requirements needed to have it appear in the slider.
