Are the links lost when we switch from a free wordpress blog to a custom domain?

Hi,
I have been writing on a blog of mine for a litle more than a month. I started with the free blog version like example.wordpress.com
Now I am interested in buying my custom domain, but I am wondering:
What will happen of old the old links?
I published some articles, the url is like example.wordpress.com/post1
I guess the url will become example.com/post1
but, if a visitor clicks on the old link example.wordpress.com/post1 , will it automatically redirect to example.com/post1 ?
I hope I was clear enough in my explanations.. Sorry, english is not my native language..

All the old links will keep on working, each Post / Page would get a second address – so you now have two ways to get to the same content – sort of like magic or adding a second door to your house – two ways to get into the same house
