Are the plugins that come with WordPress inactive and unnecessary

  • Unknown's avatar

If I want a very simple website, is the core of WordPress all I need and therefore the plugins that come with it (and I believe already in an inactive state) unnecessary and deletable?

    Hi there,

May you please confirm your site URL?

What are the plugins that you want to delete from your site?
Please note that these forums are for sites hosted on WordPress.com only. If your site is using the open-source WordPress.org software you need to seek help at these forums:https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Thank you so much for such a quick reply and for explaining the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com. I am unsure how to post to the WordPress.org forum and I’m debating what is the best way to remake an older website. I just wanted to remove all the plugins, it looked like they were not even active.

    Hello again,

I understand there are quite a number of forums each for a specific function of WordPress. It’s up to you to decide where to post I’m sure even if you post in the wrong one you will still get the help you want or the direct link for the best forum.

I would also suggest that you do a little research on the plugins that are on your site even if they are deactivated, Some may be essential and need for you to turn them on.

That’s so kind of you, thank you for spending the time to write to me and try to answer my question. I realize now it’s rather vague, I will try to figure this out.

  • Hi @artyogifun! I’d like to draw out a few specific thoughts you had and speak to those.

I’m debating what is the best way to remake an older website…

I just wanted to remove all the plugins, it looked like they were not even active…

I want a very simple website, is the core of WordPress all I need?

In most cases, if a website is mostly made up of blog posts, pages, and supporting images, the core features of WordPress are all you need.

The core features of WordPress also happen to be the foundation for sites created on WordPress.com.

If you would like more input on how this can be accomplished, we’d be happy to provide that! What would help us is to better understand what you are working with. Is the old site still online and somewhere we can see it? If so, what’s the URL for that site?

Hi @deancroyal – I’m very impressed that WordPress staff would take the time to answer my question among thousands I’m sure; thank you very much for helping me! I feel a little shy about sharing my website publicly here after asking such a newbie question, is it possible to just share it with you? I feel so much better now that you’ve reaffirmed my hopes that a basic image-based website can operate with just the core of WordPress, it appears to be working beautifully (fingers crossed, I tried to be brave and create something). WordPress is definitely amazing me, both in terms of this kindness of your support and in the ability to create a gorgeous site without much experience.

  • @artyogifun thank you for the kind words! We’re more than happy to help.

Can you share the site link in the format of an email address? Something like this would work: (email visible only to moderators and staff) — if you’ll type the site address as though it’s a fake email address, without quotes, staff will be able to see it, but the public will not. We automatically hide email addresses to prevent spammers from getting to them.

@supernovia and @deancroyal – I am grateful to you both for your help and insight. That’s a clever way to share the site privately with you and so kind of you to take the time to look it over. I just updated it and I’m hopeful I’m doing WordPress justice: (email visible only to moderators and staff)

  • You said it yourself, “it appears to be working beautifully”, and it really is! You have a great looking website.

There is an old saying which I’m sure you’re familiar with, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” If you are happy with what you have there, I don’t recommend changing it.

That goes for the plugins as well. It takes a lot of parts to make a website run well. If it’s working well now, which it is, don’t think too hard on changing things like plugins on the backend of your site. Instead, spend that time making sure the information presented on your site reads exactly how you would like.

Does this help put you at ease about what’s working for you and what you can focus on moving forward when it comes to your website? For the record, I’m quite confident in your abilities!

If you have more questions, let us know.

@deancroyal – Oh yes thank you, I am so relieved and very grateful to hear such thoughtful feedback from an expert! I do feel so much braver now that you’ve instilled more confidence in my novice abilities.

I believe it is even more a reflection on WordPress providing such a user-friendly platform and community support. I am truly amazed staff took the time to write personally to me and give so much of their valuable time to help me.

Thank you so very much for inspiring me to continue; you’ve definitely gained a loyal fan and customer.
