Are Themes ever updated once they're released?

  I’m quite new to WordPress having converted my blog from Blogger. I’m using the Twenty Ten theme, which i like. And i’ve added the widgets that i want to the sidebar. But it’s got me wondering. Once a theme has been released into the wild, is that it, or is it ever updated with new widgets?
