Are there ads on domain sites?

  I thought buying a domain on WordPress prevented ads.

  Each upgrade on WordPress.com applies exactly and only to what it says. A custom domain upgrade gets you a custom domain, period. If you want no ads, you clearly want the No Ads upgrade.
