  Are there any near future plans to integrate checkout/paypal type options within wp.com?

  It already exists in a primitive form. http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=Paypal for more sophisticated ecommerce options, you need the $300 a year bundle of upgrades plus an account at certain verified ecommerce providers.
