Are there hidden fees?

I am considering registering a domain name through WordPress in order to use AdSense and the Amazon Affiliates program to generate a source of income through my blog. Are there any fees to use these programs through WordPress?
Also, are there any hidden fees associated with registering an independent domain name, other than the $18 to get it started and the $8 to make it private?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Nothing is hidden here but few actually read the contracts they enter to register a blog ie. the Terms of Service.

Domains – Important Notes Before Upgrading

No blogger initiated advertising, paid content or sponsored content of any kind is allowed on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

There is only one advertising program called WordAds at WordPress.com and it’s for blogs on their own domains. Aside from a blog being accepted into WordAds http://www.wordads.co/ no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by WordPress.com.

On free hosted WordPress.com blog we can use a contact form and/or a PayPal button for sale of only products or services created or provided by ourselves.

There is no upgrade you can purchase from WordPress.com that changes any of that. If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising, affiliate links, paid or sponsored content you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org
    Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

No content is lost. You hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up a WordPress.org install. Then you export your content out of the WordPress.com site and import it into the WordPress.org site.

    @heidiruth,

A simple answer to your question is no:

I am considering registering a domain name through WordPress in order to use AdSense and the Amazon Affiliates program to generate a source of income through my blog

When you register a domain name on WordPress.com, it does not mean that you have a host for your site other than the free host WordPress.com.

Having a domain name is like putting on a name tag at a party: you can call yourself “Jane” with a name-tag so folks will see you as “Jane,” but in fact you are still “heidiruth.”

Or think of it as an name for your house. You can call your house “Apple Castle” and people will know that’s where you live, but your “real” address is still “555 Machintosh Road” where your property taxes, bills, and mail are sent.

A domain name upgrade means only that your name looks different (you are only paying for a name); you are still hosted for free here on WordPress.com and subject to the same original terms of service you agreed to when you started hosting your blog / site here.

A domain name upgrade is a pseudonym which does not change who you really are: you would still be hosted here for free on WordPress.com.

If you want affiliates and adverts, then you’ll need to pay someone (a company) to host your site, in addition to buying a name. You could use WordPress.org software to make your site work, or you can find other software platforms to do that.
