Are there themes beyond the ones I see in the dashboard?
-
I would like to have a theme like Journalist1.3 or Pressrow, ie. serif type in blog text, but with neither hysterical white nor pitch black as background. I really have to pay to change background color? Or are there themes with serif and a choice of colors? Are there more themes to choose from outside the dashboard?
Sorry for these simple question, I feel like a beginner (which I am)…
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

@adacornwallis: The only themes that wordpress.com users can have are those found in your dashboard. All the other themes you find on the net are for wordpress.org blogs.
@mymostfavourite: Pressrow is at the end of the third page of themes.

Oh. I thought that came with the post, since it appeared when I typed the post.
It’s http://hazfreespeech.wordpress.com
Raincoaster, can you explain why you need the url? Not that I mind sharing it, it’s good to do so both here and on other forums.
-
We need the URL because fully a third of our inquiries come from people NOT hosted on WP.com, and our answers don’t apply to them. And when you ask if they’re hosted at WP.com they say yes, even if they aren’t. By looking at the blog, we can see immediately.
And the answer for WP.com blogs is, if you don’t like the way the existing five pages of themes work, yes you have to pay for the upgrade and do the changes yourself. This can’t be stressed enough: you will have to learn to use CSS and do it yourself. There’s no staff support and only two or three forum contributors who deal with CSS questions at all. It is strongly recommended that you not purchase the upgrade if you’re not already fluent in CSS. You can practice with the free Preview until your skills are good enough, then make the purchase.
-
And a second reason is that we often have to check the blog in question to find out what the problem is or which solution applies.
As for themes, note that in several of the available ones you can upload a header image of your own, and there are a few in which you can change the color scheme.

Yeah, and I was asking which ones have serif and theme color, since one can’t search by serif and can’t really see if it IS serif, I’d have to click on all of them. I thought I could find out quicker here.
Quentin doesn’t really match the subject. And changing header picture does not make reading of the blog text better for the eyes. Everyone forces black and white on web users, and everyone has eyeblastingly intense and sharp lcd screens. It’s a kinda masochistic trend. Let’s wait and see what happens to everyone’s eyes once the lcds get 99000:1 contrast. /rant

@adacornwallis: Agree on white. For my blog I’ve chosen Chaotic Soul (grey text on almost black background). I’ve even set the browser I use most to display webpages with the colors I prefer instead of their original ones.
If you don’t want black either, and Quentin is the wrong style (hope Girl in Green and Sweet Blossoms also are!), then you’re only left with the (dull) Andreas 04 as well as Dusk, Emire, and Solipsus – as opposed to almost 60 with white text background (and that includes Grid Focus, the latest “proud” addition to the list). Hard to believe…
I don’t think anyone of us can tell you which themes have serif fonts: we’d all have to click to see. You might care to check this:
http://internetducttape.com/tools/wordpress/wordpress-theme-reviews/
Very detailed, includes fonts, but unfortunately left incomplete: only 21 out of the (currently) 72 themes. As for the color customizable themes I hinted at, I’m aware of three but none will do for you: you can change the color of text, links, and header, in one of them the sidebars background as well, but (guess what…) the background of the main posts area remains white in all three of them.

You could also try http://wpthemes1.wordpress.com/ for an analysis of the wp.com themes.

Adam, thanks for the tips :) Will investigate.
rosclarke, hmm, the thumbnails didn’t really help beyond what’s in the dashboard.
I guess I’ll have to sell my soul and go with white. PressRow is the fave right now, at least it has dark grey text instead of black. But I’ll try the themes Adam mentioned.
