  are you able to change the menu colours or only back ground?

  Hi,

  Depending on what theme you are using, you may or may not have those color options in your Customizer.

  The other way to change colors is by adding rules to your CSS. You need to have Custom CSS which is a feature of the WordPress.com Premium and WordPress.com Business plans.

  All colors can be modified using custom CSS, but this requires upgrading your plan to either Premium or Business.
